"How thrilling it is to have everyone back together again! This year will be filled with enchantment and excitement, but the most important thing cultivated in Herbology is knowledge."
— Professor Garlick to her students[src]

Professor Mirabel Garlick[2] (fl. 1890) was an English Muggle-born[3] witch,[2] who taught Herbology at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the late 19th century.[4]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Garlick was born in London and grew up in a household full of Muggles. She did not feel at home until she was a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where she was sorted into Hufflepuff house. It was at Hogwarts that she finally 'blossomed' and discovered her extraordinary affinity for magical plants.[2]

During her first year, she met the seventh-year Sirona Ryan, forming a lifelong friendship.[3][6] They met before Mirabel's first week had even finished, as Mirabel felt she did not fit in with the other first years and felt Hogwarts was not the right place for her. Mirabel went to the Three Broomsticks Inn, where Sirona worked as a waitress, and considered writing a letter to her parents about how she wished to withdraw from the school. Sirona approached her while she was huddled in a corner, staring at her empty bit of parchment, and sat with her. Mirabel grew enamoured with Sirona's confidence with who she was, and this inspired Mirabel to be more confident in herself as well.[5]

In her seventh year, she was awarded the Hogwarts Herbology Award in recognition of her exemplary skill in the field of Herbology.[7]

Teaching career[]

"I hope you gained a greated appreciation for the flora in our lives. I am forever enraptured by it. Just yesterday I spent hours pruning my self-fertilising shrubs and Flutterby bushes. Didn't realise how long I'd been at it until the sun began to set. Well, if there's one thing I love to see more than my plants thriving, it's one of my students doing the same."

At some point, she became the Professor of Herbology at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her sunny demeanour and flowery language charmed colleagues and students alike, prompting some students to worry she might one day leave them for another greenhouse.[2]

During the 1890–1891 school year, she had high hopes for Hufflepuff's chances at Quidditch, although she had not yet learned the rules. Regardless, Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black had cancelled Quidditch for the year due to an injury during last spring's final.[8]

Later that year, she gave extracurricular tuition to the new fifth year student on how to use the Levitation Charm and the Knockback Jinx.[9][10] She also gave her fifth year class an assignment to write a twenty inch essay on dittany and its uses.[11] Mirabel Garlick was not present at the battle that ensued in the Keepers' Caverns at the end of the school year with Ranrok's invasion of the school, though she was present at the memorial ceremony for her fallen colleague, Eleazar Fig, that occurred after Hogwarts' victory in the conflict.[12]

Physical description[]

Garlick had red hair in braided ponytails and light skin. She wore a green hat adorned with flowers and a green dress.[4]

Personality and traits[]

She appeared to be fairly kind and caring with a sunny demeanour who used flowery language, calling her students "roses".[4][2]

Relationships[]

Sirona Ryan[]

"That day in the Three Broomsticks when you spotted me huddled in a corner, staring blankly at an untouched Butterbeer and an empty bit of parchment, my quill dripping ink woefully onto the floor, and you came to sit with me – well, I shall never forget it."

Sirona Ryan

Professor Garlick had a close friendship with Sirona Ryan, a part-time waitress and later proprietor of the Three Broomsticks Inn, whom she met when she was a first-year student at Hogwarts, and Sirona was in her seventh year. Their friendship bloomed when Sirona's confidence and charm inspired Mirabel to be more confident herself, finding the ability to accept who she was.[5] Indeed, by the time Mirabel matured and became the Professor of Herbology at the school, she and Sirona had formed a lifelong friendship.[3]

Dorothy Sprottle[]

Professor Garlick appeared to have a good relationship with Dorothy Sprottle, who was also on good terms with their mutual friend, Sirona Ryan. Mirabel would keep in touch with Dorothy, but would seldom visit her.[5][13] Nevertheless, she enjoyed the company of Dorothy and her husband, Aidan, "for their delightful conversation and, I am unashamed to admit, their incomparable Cauldron Cakes."[5] A letter sent to Professor Garlick in the 1890–1891 school year by Sirona Ryan indicated that Dorothy had been asking after Mirabel and that it had been "far too long" since her last visit.[13]

Eleanor Everleigh[]

Professor Garlick's appeared to have some form of warm friendship with Eleanor Everleigh, the aunt of Lenora Everleigh, one of Mirabel's Hufflepuff students. The two exchanged letters, with Mirabel sending Eleanor her presumably homegrown, sweet strawberries. Eleanor remarked that everything Mirabel cultivated, "from Bitteroot to berries", was of high quality.[14]

Hogwarts students and staff[]

"Lenora so adores you. As do all of your students, I'm sure."

Mirabel Garlick appeared to have a very good working relationship with her fellow professors, as she could be seen having a friendly discussion with Dinah Hecat about the 1890–1891 school year's cancelled Quidditch season.[8] Meanwhile, the students under Professor Garlick had a very high opinion of her, with Lenora Everleigh in particular completely adoring her.[14] When the new fifth-year student attended Hogwarts, Mirabel gave them private tuition on the Levitation Charm and the Knockback Jinx.[9][10]
