I personally believe he had good and bad in him maybe more leanings to the bad side. The house discrimination throughout the whole series was terrible as well as the fact he was a death eater and actively used the unforgivable curses. I don't think we can let him off because he loved Harry's mother. The good may have come in his older years when he regretted the things he did earlier and did work for the order but the house discrimination did still go on which can show lingering traits from his younger years.

You said that you can't forgive Snape for killing Dumbledore. Does he even need forgiveness for it? Dumbledore ORDERED him to kill him and we all as readers knew how much he regretted it.

Like one of the above said, bullying children was part of his cover as a death eater. Treating Harry like a gem would come off as fishy, wouldn't it?

Killing isn't good? Then would Harry be bad for killing Voldemort? Would Dumbledore be bad for killing Gellert? Please elaborate on this. Besides, the Battle of the Seven Potters is SUPPOSED to revolve around killing each other, I don't understand where you're going with this one.

You left out quite a lot of good things about Snape as well and repeated some bad things.

- Gave Harry his humiliating memories so that he could save the wizarding world from Voldemort.

- Saved Harry when he was being jinxed in a Quidditch competition.

- Killed two death eaters as well.

- Lied to Voldemort and said that Draco killed Dumbledore just so that Voldemort wouldn't be mad at Draco. How bad amirite?

I pity Snape. He was raised in a bad environment without any good influence in his life. Can you blame him for going wrong if no one was stopping him?

I’ve just been realising people above have been saying that James has changed and how Snape was so bad even in his later life and I’ve been thinking. Do you know how much easier it will have been for James. James was already the bully. For him to stop really meant no big sacrifice because he shouldn’t be doing it anyway. And another point is yeah James did stop but after YEARS of bullying in public and humiliating Snape. Can’t you realise how traumatising that would be? And another point the reason Snape was mean to Neville was because if he was the chosen one Lily would still be alive and the house biasedness. Well he didn’t have to do that and I’m not saying he is 100% an angel but to me he is 99% there 😊

Come on! Most of your opinions are partial. You just hate Snape too much but he doesn't deserve this much of hate. Yeah he was bad at times, many times and was sooooo wrong about many things but he DID compensate for that, didn't he? He did everything he could to just prove that he was not all that bad. No wait, he didn't even try to prove it to others. He remained under cover and didn't care about how wrong people thought about him. Now, doesn't that deserve some credit?

And if you haven't noticed, life had been so very unfair to him. If you were facing the same circumstances as Severus, you would know better than to call him even worse than Voldemort. Severus was deprived of his one and only love, he had to, HAD TO kill the person who he cared so much for, he had to suffer from so many kinds of bullying, his father tortured him so much at home and Hogwarts, the place which could have been so much better and nice for him, was also made no worse than a hell because of James and his friends who made life hell for him.

It wasn't so easy for him to forget all that James had done to him and get along with Harry. But still, he died to save Harry's life. Snape was a secret hero.

Now for the thing about him being Neville's Boggart. Well, yeah, that was too much. And I won't take his side in treating the Gryffindors so badly and torturing his students. But well, let's just accept that this was the bad thing in him. Everyone has something negative in them and we can forgive Snape for this one mistake, can't we?

Well, in my opinion, Severus Snape will always remain a great hero. He WAS the best and my favourite character.

for everyone saying the snape had to treat harry badly or else it would be suspicious, not true...harry didn’t need to be treated like a celebrity, but snape could have laid back on the crude insults, especially about Harry’s father. for god sake this is an eleven year old kid who only recently realized his parents got bloody murdered! and also, snape’s difficult past doesn’t excuse him being such a cruel bully to children. people go thru harsh times that’s life but you have the choice to turn bad or stay good. snape made the choice to be how he was. I agree with jk, he really isn’t a hero nor a devil, but in my opinion, I really don’t like him lol
