I agree. I’m a Hufflepuff but I’m not sure if 11 year old me would have been sorted into that house tbh

Well they already get sorted by testing into career fields at 15 so I think there is a different approach all together.

Everyone tries to rationalize the sorting hat as It is one of the biggest topics up for debate. Probably due to It being questioned in the book itself. I think that trying to compare a magical hat that knows someone’s deepest personality the instant It sits on their head isn’t rational.

The sad truth is that we will never be able to comprehend something of such nature. I think that the hat was pretty accurate and knew what It was doing or they wouldn’t have continued to use It.

Same I think it should wait until at least second year so they can find and learn everything about the houses and be sorted with kids there own age and I think they should just have classes with their houses or just sleep with them and have a commen room for all of them what they do now putting all the people with the same traits in one places makes things bad putting most of the people who were radishes to be racist together make them worse if the were raided with muggleborns they might think different and things like that so either wait until second year or not do it

We can't exactly say what the sorting hat can see in a person's mind. He has the intelligence of all four founders, after all. It could be that the sorting hat not only considers the personality and values of a person, but also predicts what house might be good for the character development of a person (So that his reasoning behing e. g. Peter Pettigrew was that he might've grown up to be braver than it actually happened). And I therefore don't think that we can say whether the sorting ceremony should take place another time or even not be done anymore since we can't know everything about the sorting ceremony and how it works. The sorting hat might even have the ability of a seer, for all we know, so his sorting would be insanely accurate and really rarely false!

It is impossible to judge whether something like this should happen or not since, even if sorting had taken place later someone might have a drastic change of personality after the 5th year even. I just cannot imagine Hogwarts without the houses. Plus the hat is an object which is mysterious and has never been described or explained thoroughly. It could be something enchanted to know everyone immediately.

I don't think it really matters.

I mean, British schools have "houses" as well and they're... really just a way of encouraging healthy competition in point-earning.

I think that they should sort them in first year and maybe re-sort them in 4th year, because if you look at Pettigrew as an example, Pettigrew is the opposite of all the Gryffindor traits. People definitely change though.
