<p>Rowling does have the right to do whatever she wants with her characters, but Rowling didn't write The Cursed Child.</p><p>That said, Rowling selling her characters to the highest bidder and letting them do that to Cedric (and making Harry and Ron awful parents) was a huge insult to the fans of her work. She has the right to sell out, but it doesn't make it any less disgusting.</p>
She was involved in the writing of Cursed Child. She could have overridden the decision if she’d wanted to. This wasn’t an insult to Cedric’s memory, because Cedric doesn’t exist. However, it does completely go against everything we previously knew against the character. He is no longer a basically nice guy who happened to be Harry’s rival. He is now an unstable psychopath who was one bad day away from becoming a monster.
<p>I think that is supposed to be the point. It is an terrible world and Cedric's memory is insulted because he was humiliated. It was not fun to read but it adds meaning to the story.</p>
