<p>as you all know, Dumbledore intended to hire Alastor Moody to be the defense against the dark arts teacher in harry's 4th year. Moody agreed, but was overpowered by Barty Crouch Jr before he could actually start teaching. </p><p>
</p><p>so my question is, after the events of book 4, why did the real Moody not take up the position? he had already agreed to become the new teacher for the class, and dumbledore wouldn't have to accept someone from the ministry to take over the position.</p>

He was only planning to take the job for a year. He would have left at the end of book 4 anyway. Besides, once the Order was reformed, they really needed Moody on the front lines.
<p>^ Plus I think the Ministry was forcing Umbridge on Dumbledore, I doubt he really had a choice</p>

Technically, the law that allowed them to force Umbridge only came into effect when Dumbledore wasn’t able to find a replacement himself. That’s why Dumbledore was able to stop them from putting another ministry stooge in Trelawney’s place by hiring Firenze.
Either way, moody being stuck in the trunk for a year would not make him eager to actually teach the next year, and he was planning on only doing so for a year, plus the order of the Phoenix
<p>i think taking up the DADA post would be more beneficial for the order than the other work he does, as it'd prevent the ministry from putting a stooge in that position and thus undermining Hogwarts and Dumbledore</p>
