Honestly I have a bit of trouble with this whole Horcrux creating thing. I mean you have to kill someone, fine. But you can't tell me that this is all it takes. There has to be a special preparation or something, so I think Voldy intended to create yet another horcrux but not Harry and not with his curse backfiring.

I think maybe you have to prepare your soul for splitting, then kill somebody.

The process must be very complicated and horrific.

Otherwise anyone could have made a hocrux.

He only wanted to make 6 but he accidentaly made Harry one so that is 7

He had intentionally made 6 horcruxes, splitting his soul into 7 pieces. This made his soul unstable and weak, so when his Killing curse backfired on him in Godric's Hollow the bit of soul that was left in his body split again and a piece of it latched onto the only living thing nearby: Harry Potter. This caused Voldemort to have 7 horcruxes but his soul was in 8 pieces.

Yeah @Harrypotterexpert101 is 100% right, I think you might have misread it? I’m pretty sure it says that they think it was 7. You were right, Voldemort did accidentally make another Horcrux, you were just one number off!

@SusanBoyle666 Yes, he had 7 horcruxes, but there were 8 pieces of his soul. See, you have to count the piece that still resides in his body :).
