On the one hand this would have been heartbreaking and gut wrenching to read, something I'm always existed for (you know, ze feels). On the other had this could have been too much. I mean if you think about it, Harry has so very few people, grown up people who see him as who he is. Hagrid saved Harry from the Dursleys and made sure Harry would feel loved at Hogwarts (writing him and stuff because he had no one else who would). Hagrid always wathed out for Harry, like a father would have (unlike Sirius who did want Harry to do some mischief). Hagrid was present (unlike Athur), which Harry needed after a childhood of abuse and neglect. Hagrid saw Harry Potter, the tiny baby he had to let go (for his own safety as he believed) and then the scrawny still tiny boy who had no one else, quite like himself. Hagrid was Harrys first friend and the first person to love him unconditionally (at least as far as Harry knows because he can't remember his parents).
