Chapter 15
Remus again
As Remus and Sirius apparated home, Sirius turned to Remus and said “What was that”? the moment they stepped foot into the familiar looking
home. They felt like they haven’t been here in weeks. “I don’t know, but look what they did to her”! Remus cried.
Remus pointed his wand at his wife, and the blood disappeared from her body. Nymphadora’s bloody robes turned into a nightgown with a second flick, and Remus thought of when Nymphadora would wolf whistle as he changed in the other room. Before, he had resented her saying that. Now, it was the only sound he wanted to hear. He lay Nymphadora’s body onto the bed. Her skin was pale and her chest barely rose. It was evident that if they had been alive, she would’ve died of blood loss.
Sirius pulled a pitcher of juice and some chocolate frogs out of the cabinet. Remus walked in.
“Are you sure they don’t have hospitals here, Sirius”?
“No” he said angrily. “Its the worst part here-no hospitals, everyone has to do it the muggle way”!
“Sirius has a point”, Remus thought. Nymphadora was in worse condition then she was at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries 7 long years ago. The night was growing dark and Remus decided he would get some sleep. Sirius had insisted on sleeping with Nymphadora as Padfoot. He claimed it was to keep her warm as the big, shaggy black dog rubbed against her body, but Remus secretly knew he was trying to keep his niece safe.
“I’ll make sure she’s ok, Andromeda” Padfoot thought while he rubbed his big black fur against Nymphadora’s sleeping form. “I’ll make sure she’s ok”....
Remus couldn’t sleep. “Was it my fault”? “Could I have done better”? He thought as he drifted off into light slumber for couldn’t have been more then 2 hours.
The next day, Remus and Sirius sat at the table, not quite knowing what to do. The day seemed to get grimmer and grimmer without the familiar female figure digging through the cabinets, making funny remarks and boiling hot water. Suddenly, they heard a knock at the door.
Lily and James stood at the door, beaming.
“Hello!” They both said in unison. Lily held a big blue box and James had a box full of hats and mittens.
Remus peeked outside. It was snowing! He had just realized that it was December 1st.
“Hi Moony! Hi Padfoot! James said brightly. “Lily’s brought some sort of muggle invention, its called an advent calendar, huh”!
Lily just smiled. “Hello Remus, hi Sirius”. She looked around. “Where’s Nymphadora”? Remus was half expecting Dora to walk out as if nothing happened and say “don’t call me Nymphadora” but no, her body was still laying unconscious in the other room.
“She’s unconscious” Remus said flatly.
James looked taken aback and Lily’s forehead was creased with worry.
“What happened”?
Remus sat them down and put the boxes in the corner of the room.
“Well... Nymphadora bought the seeing eye from a dark wizard and he put a tracker in it that slowly sucked the life out of her and then we had a row because of it and then she went missing so I smashed it out of rage and then I found the tracker and then it started flying around and it led us to this horrible place AND THEY WERE THREATENING TO SLIT HER THROAT AND THERE WERE GASHES IN HER LEGS AND THEY CRUCIO’D HER AND ITS ALL MY FAULT”! Remus was beside himself. He openly sobbed into James’ arms while Lily looked at Sirius with great concern.
“Is she ok?” Lily expressed great concern for her good friend.
“She’s alive, but her condition is horrible” Sirius said, his face tight and his voice grim.
Lily took one look at Nymphadora’s frail body and her pale, gaunt skin and said “Oh Remus, i’m so sorry”-
“Why don’t we open your- whats it called- abber calendar”? Remus said quickly, trying to change the subject.
“Advent calendar”, she corrected gently, setting the box on the table.
“I found this in the closet- you open one of the little flaps each day until Christmas Eve” Lily explained.
James was talking to Sirius as Remus opened the first little flap on the advent calendar.
“OH, the advent calendar”! James beamed. “Lily found that in the closet, we have so much muggle stuff”-
As Remus opened the flap, a little stuffed cat fell out of the first pocket.
“Awww” everyone oohed and ahh-ed as they stroked the little orange cat. Remus set it on the counter and went to retrieve a keg of butterbeer. He wondered how his wife ever managed to get all the housework done in one day as he dug through piles of pots and pans. After Lily and James left the house bidding farewell and promising to bring food over every so often. The house quickly became cold and lonely as an ashen faced Padfoot listened to Remus sit quietly and Nymphadora’s bedside and say “Im so sorry Dora... Please wake up” and he kissed her on the forehead. His face was creased with worry as he trudged back to the guest room and Padfoot fell asleep at the foot of the bed.
