According to Fanlore: "Wix is a gender-neutral word for witch/wizard, when 'witch' and 'wizard' are used as gendered words for the same thing, as in Harry Potter. "

Another fandom of mine used 'mage' for both genders as well.

I think that’s the kind of thing jkr wouldn’t have thought about. She created many gender-separate things, I doubt she’d make something gender neutral. For example, her only ever trans character preyed on children, if there had been a trans female and they wanted to go to the girls dormitory they wouldn’t be able to.. etc. so I don’t really think that would have been specified in canon.
