^^yeah. Waiting for him to become a criminal wouldn't work because then he's already too powerful and there's also the problem of different timelines. CC did adress that (badly but still). We don't know what the present wuld look like if there never had been a first wizard war. That's a pretty big difference we're tackling here, more than just attending more classes to study more

^exactly. CC is canon proof. If you drastically change the past and then return to the future the entire future is changed (now if we are to follow that logically that would either mean that there is now no reason to go back in time, thus you never got back in time, thus this new time doesn't exist and the timetravel has cancelled itself out, OR you're not actually travelling back in time but rather travel to a whole other timeline)
