He was only rude towards Hermione on their first year, when they were kids. Then they kept arguing, but it wasn't only Ron

That was all past the first two books, tbh. But Hermione was so much more useful, still.

A character being good or bad doesn't depend on how useful him/her/they is/are.

Ron wasn't the most strong or intelligent boy, that's true. But he was a loyal, caring and sharing friend with a huge and kind heart.
