I don't really remember, to be honest. It was the early 2000s, though, and Pottermania was in full swing (it was hard not to hear about it somewhere). I got the first book as a gift, and to be honest, I didn't really enjoy it at first. I was still pretty young, and it was a longer, more detailed book than I was used to reading (Magic Tree House was more the kind of novels I was reading at the time.) About a year later, though, I borrowed the first Harry Potter movie from the library, and I loved it! Then, when I tried reading the book again, I enjoyed it. I think maybe the fact I was a little older made me feel ready to read a more in-depth book, but I think it was really the movie that got me most into the series.
