Sirius turned on the faucet, letting the water run over his fingers. He splashed the cuts on his face, reaching for a paper towel as water streamed down his nose and mouth. It was colored red from blood as it dripped to the sink, smearing marks of washed out orange over the white enamel. Sirius cursed, wincing as he dabbed at the wound.
"Why the hell is it bleeding so much?" He said. Remus stood next to him, looking concerned. James was there too, having ditched his last class to come see Sirius. For all his care in rushing over, he did not look concerned in the least. In fact, he looked like he was barely containing laughter.
"It's not funny," said Sirius, though he felt a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Of course not," said James. "I hate seeing my friend in pain." Sirius stood there, the paper towel plastered to his face as it started to get wet from a combination of blood and water.
"It, doesn't hurt," he said thickly, squinting one eye shut. James laughed, setting down the ziplock bag.
"This is literally so ironic. It's even better than snivelus's sectum sempra…" James shook his head. "Damn, Padfoot. I wish I had been there…" he bent over, laughing harder. Sirius grinned, and then cursed again as the smile pulled the cut on his cheek. He peeled the paper towel away. And then he started laughing anyway.
"God." Said Remus. "You two are insane." Sirius kept laughing, even though the cut under his eye felt like it was gaping open. It was almost satisfying to pull it. The pain was sharp, twisted. But when you pushed it to its worst, and kept it there, it became something less. What was pain? The sensation? He focused on it, trying to actually recognize it for something other than escape. And it became strange. A point. If you thought about it too hard or endured it too long it just became another part of existence. It was still pain, but you somehow didn't know how to recognize it anymore. A dulled aspect of existence. So Sirius kept smiling.
"I don't care anymore," he said. "I don't f***ing care."
