VENUS WILLIAMS (VEN)🪐🔮
Venus looked out the window, where a streetlight cast a forlorn watery glow over the pavement. Streams of water flowed along the gutters from the rain; she could hear a faint gurgle of the draining water every now and then between the passing of cars. She tightened her grip around the aluminum window latch. It was cold and hard under her shaking fingers, like it was telling her to stay away. Slowly, she eased the window open.
Her senses were immediately struck by the rain. The clean smell filled her nostrils, mixed with the slightly less appealing scent of smoke and propane. Smoke and rain at the same time, a strange phenomenon, but not uncommon in her city. She sighed, feeling the breeze across her face, listening to the noises of the highway. Sitting there, staring into the dark, in a place that made her feel comfortable, she could finally stop and think. Reflect.
The last day had been a blur, packing for hogwarts, visiting with her Aunt and uncle, politely smiling for her parents and assuring them she would have a great year. A prefect badge had come in the mail, much to her father's delight. He had been a prefect too, he told her. He was so proud. He just knew she would get perfect OWLS! Her mom had sat next to him and nodded. She didn't know as much about the details of hogwarts, but still valued education every bit as much as her husband. She was expecting the good grades too. They both thought that Venus would be a top student, and in a few years make it to head girl. And really, why shouldn't they? Hadn't she passed four entire years at hogwarts with outstanding grades? Hadn't she followed in her mother's footsteps, taking astronomy every year and proclaiming it her favorite subject? Hadn't she given them every reason to beleive that she was an intelligent, responsible girl, who was, when it came down to it, nothing more than a copy of themselves? Venus sighed, resting her head on the cold window frame.
The wind stung her eyes, and so she closed them for a moment, escaping the sights and escaping her thoughts. The world disappeared in the darkness, though the glow of the streetlights was still impressed under her eyelids. She felt vulnerable, but still somehow at peace. A stray raindrop caught the side of her face, and she winced slightly, then smiled. The rain was beautiful. Everything was. She loved her parents, despite their expectations. And she valued knowledge herself, didn't she? She wanted to be a responsible person. She had always dreamed of being a prefect. So why did it all feel so wrong?
Sighing again, she picked herself up, running her fingers through the wavy brown hair tumbling over her shoulders. She could do this. She always had before. She just had to keep on moving, and bury her doubts for inspection on a later date. Maybe some other night; a night when she didn't have to get up at five the next morning. She stood, and shut the window. She didn't want the carpet to get wet. After all, she was a responsible girl.
