So, Madame Olympe Maxime.
I think she’s married. Here’s why:
She’s French, and ‘Madame’ means married. ‘Mademoiselle’ means unmarried.
This means that Madame Maxime may have been married, but to whom?
I also did look at her page on the wiki, and it suggested that she may have been married too. It went on to say that ‘Madame’ also means someone older than you, above you, or someone that commands respect. It then compared her to Madam Pomfrey that this may be the case and that Madame Maxime was never married. But, Madam Pomfrey doesn’t have an ‘e’ after her madam/madame. I then found out that ‘Madam’ denotes authority, and is mostly common in America, so is Madam Pomfrey American? That’s another theory, but I’m not talking about it. I found very few resources that said ‘Madame’ can be used for unmarried woman. Even though I believe it can be, I think it more likely that Madame Maxime may have been married, so I looked into that.
I found nothing that hinted Madame Maxime was ever married, so it may have been an accident on JKR’s part. But maybe Madame Maxime and Hagrid never married BECAUSE Madame Maxime was already married.
I think Madame Maxime is married, but how did JKR miss that she put madame? Surely when she wrote GoF ‘madame’ still meant a married woman? Did JKR know what she did and decided that Madame Maxime could have a husband, but it would be hidden from public?
Tell me your thoughts!
