What am I?

Hints: Doesn’t have to do with animagi. The scholar was an adult male during the MS that died. He was relatively well known. He died off-screen in book 7. He’s on the side of Harry. the task wasn’t a physical one.

This thing is solid. It’s been seen/mentioned in the first half of the MS.
