Since the name Gryffindor is actually a variant of the words griffon d'or, which is French for "golden griffon," what are everybody's thoughts on the possibility of the Gryffindor family coming from medieval France before settling wherever in Great Britain?

I can see the Gryffindors originally being from either Normandy, Brittany, or Gaul.
