I think it's mostly about what you're used to. In the books, Hermione is described to be a white girl with brown hair numerous times. Some versions of the HP book covers even have Hermione on the cover, who reflects the same description as above. Not to mention, most fans have watched the movies, which, again, has a Hermione fits her canon appearance. So when you've gotten used to seeing Hermione as what her book description is, it'd probably be pretty shocking to see the rebooted Hermione, who, unlike her canon desc., is black, with dark hair. Personally, I don't mind it that much, but I can see why some fans might be bothered by her appearance in this reboot.

For the most part, I don’t think people are actually bothered by the idea of Hermione being black. They’re more bothered by the fact that JK Rowling tried to claim that she “never specified white skin” when she in fact did, numerous times throughout the books. I have no problem with Hermione being black or racially ambiguous, but I do have a problem with JK Rowling trying to win diversity points from a character that was clearly originally intended to be white.

I imagine some white characters as pocs (like lynn in divergent) but some people i imagine as white, like hermy

Features that we do know Hermione has are brown eyes, brown hair, and said hair is described as bushy, and while on there own those traits could belong to any race or ethnicity, together it is more common for someone with African or Latina heritage.

I personally don’t mind the HC I’ve adopted WOC Hermione as my own. I do get mad when ppl try to overlook canon info and insist that she has to be a poc according to the books.

I don't want to get people angered or whatever, but in the books, JK had described Hermione as 'white-faced' at a point (prob multiple times even).

I 100% think that Hermione is white in the books as she is in the films.

@RedGamer2009! While you could be correct, I do want to point out context is everything. As I am mostly certain the only time Hermione’s face is mentioned to be “white” or “pale” is after she’s had a shock or is scared, because POC’s face’s do become more pale when the blood drains from it to.

Why doesn't JK just clear it up for everyone so we don't need to debate this like...ever?

Honestly, I think if JK intended for Hermione to be a WOC, she would’ve specified in the books. Dean Thomas and Kingsley Shacklebolt are both described as black upon being introduced. Cho and the Patil twins, while technically not having their race/skin color described in the books, all have ethnic names, so it can be assumed that they’re not white. Furthermore, JK had at least some control over who was cast to play which characters in the movies, and all the characters I just listed were portrayed by POC, whereas Hermione was portrayed by Emma Watson.

I would absolutely love it if Hermione were black in the books, but sadly I doubt she was ever meant to be seen as anything but white when JK wrote the series. At the end of the day though, her race doesn’t matter as long as long as she stays the Hermione we know and love!

I don’t think they ever mentioned her being black, but she could be. It’s based on how you, the reader, imagines her. Personally I imagined her as being white, but there’s nothing wrong with thinking that she’s black. As mentioned above, it doesn’t matter as long as she still has the same personality! :)
