It's stated that whoever is chosen is magically bound to the tournament because the goblet of fire binds them in away that doesn't allow them to back away from the tournament. They have to participate even if they don't want to.

i'm pretty sure it mentions somewhere in the book that you like have to participate if chosen or you'll like explode or smth
