⚠️TRIGGER WARNING FOR Y'ALL JUST IN CASE THIS SOUNDS RUDE, I DON'T WANT TO BE RUDE BUT IF I SOUND RUDE THEN I APOLOGIZE BECAUSE THAT IS NOT MY INTENTION⚠️
*sighs* This is the exact kind of Molly Apologist behavior I've been talking about.
Don't get angry, I've been that route, not necessarily with Molly but I was once a Snape Apologist, but now I can acknowledge his evil actions are absolutely inexcusable while still liking him as a character. Let me tell you, it's not easy to admit being an Apologist, but I'm doing it to prove a point that you can like a character while also acknowledging that they are a bad person.
Which is what I'm advising you two with Molly, I'm not forcing you to dislike her, you can still like her, it's okay to like a fictional bad person just as long as they are fictional, which Molly is (thank Merlin she's not real).
But there's nothing that excuses what she said to Ron, it might not be worse than what Lucius did, and I'm not saying Lucius isn't a bad father, he is, he is inarguably a worse parent as a person, but I'm talking about who's more well written in the case, and Molly is not.
As a person/parent, yes Lucius would be considered worse.
As a character, Molly is definitely the worst mom ever.
Lucius is a terrible father, but his character is at least expected to be hated and they did a good job because I used to be effing biased with my hatred of him.
Molly on the other hand, was expected to be adored by the audience, which didn't work for me but sadly for loads of other people since Molly is one of the most overrated characters I've seen.
There's no excuse for what she said, so I'd greatly appreciate it if you didn't justify Molly's actions by calling it "easily annoyed mom stuff" or "Oh she was joking/being sarcastic".
There's nothing that justifies Molly's disgusting act as a mom, whether she sarcastically snapped at Ron or told him doesn't matter to me, she still said something incredibly appalling to both him and Harry, and I highly doubt she would feel bad for Ron considering she actually seems to hate him the most of her family, she even got mad at him for saving Harry's life in Chamber Of Secrets while trying to put on the clown outfit and show favoritism towards Harry, and Ron even made it clear that the Dursleys were starving him and there were bars on his window. Not just that, in the book version of Chamber Of Secrets, Molly threatened Ron in her letter to him after finding out about him stealing his dad's car with, "You wait till I get a hold of you", which may indicate Ron probably even suffers physical abuse at home, this quote was not put in the movies for some reason idk why, but it doesn't matter, the Books are more Canon, and in the books, Molly threatened Ron.
think that's a bit of a reach, parents often tend to make baseless threats when mad at their children and i don't think it actually reflects abuse, we can only judge what we've seen i guess and from what i've seen she does love her children a lot and wouldn't actually hurt them
BUT i will agree she's a worse character compared to lucius, but only because she has misogyny implanted in her, 'cause first off.. the mother thing is getting tiring. i'm pretty sure almost half of the female characters are mothers or end up being mothers, and in the end, the entire point of their character.. is being a mother. like the rest, molly has no interest than anything except her kids, yet arthur is shown to have an interest with muggles. i think i can say that with almost all of the parents, the fathers are fleshed out and have personalities while the mothers are just mothers. and the only other thing we see molly interested in besides her husband is gilderoy lockhart. a man.
so i agree she's a worse character, just for a different reason
@Glowing.Pink.Eyes I dont think you understand what it's like to have kids. Now, I haven't experienced it for myself, but i have the empathy to know how tiring it is. Teenagers can be incredibly disrespectful. Ron refused to wear something that his mom clearly made an effort in getting him, as their family is poor. Molly's "threat" probably just implied he was going to get screamed at and punished, which is perfectly reasonable, because he STOLE HIS DAD'S CAR, that was very dangerous. She was worried for his life. I can totally see a mother doing all the things Molly has done. She is an amazing mother, and any supposedly bad thing she did is justified.
I will say Lucius is better as a character, and isnt a TERRIBLE father, but Molly is way better, as a person and as a mother.
I TOTALLY AGREE MOTHCAT11 MOLLY IS JUST DOING HER BEST! SHE HAS 7 CHILDREN AND SHE DOES EVERYTHING AROUND THE HOUSE, HOW CAN SHE BE PATIENT ALL THE TIME???? POOR MOLLY, SHE'S STILL SO AWESOME THOUGH!!!!!!
Merope Riddle's Dad
@Dipshnurg right answer
^^never thought of marvolo gaunt... UR A GENIUS!!!
It doesn't matter if she's serious or not. Either way she's f****** disgusting.
If she wasn't serious, she's still wrong because she gave Ron robes that are most likely going to humiliate him in public and she gave Ginny robes that she actually likes which proves she favors Ginny over Ron, and she doesn't even seem to care about Ginny either since in Sorcerer's Stone she ignored Ginny when she was crying.
If she was serious (which I'm on this one of she is), she is just... I don't even know HOW people are going to defend her on this one but I would love to see them try because I bet anything there's probably going to be a lot of Ron-Blaming, downplaying of Molly's disgusting quote and normalization of her behavior.
Also, she says it in Goblet Of Fire.
What you should know about Molly Weasley is that she is a woman and product of her time. The Harry Potter story (all seven books) is set in the 1990s (and the epilogue chapter of DH is set in 2017). Molly is ten years older than Harry's parents and she is twenty years older than her eldest child Bill, meaning that Molly grew up during the 50s and 60s.
In the quote highlighted above, Molly is behaving in a way that most parents did up until the 90s (though I'm not sure about the part about making Ron going to the ball naked). Sure, Molly's behavior may not look okay by today's standards, but back in her days (and especially when she was a child of the 50s and 60s) it wasn't such a big deal and was sometimes even considered to be normal (not to be offensive or anything, but this behavior is still being practiced today by most parents in Africa and Asia, including severe forms of corporal punishments).
@Ebb2k98 mmm solid point with the timing! I never thought about it that way 🤔. I still don't really like Molly but your point is good enough to convince others I'm sure!
And as for Lucius, even though I loathe his character, an argument can be made that Lucius was just raising his son in the same way that he too had been raised by his own father. Draco may have been a product of his upbringing in terms of indoctrination and teaching hate, but so too were Lucius and Narcissa.
What do you think?
