Honestly I feel the same about snape - I pity the child he was but cannot stand the adult he became. (opposite with malfoy - he didn't have a tough childhood at all).

Though I kind of pity Voldemort as a child, it is no justification for what he did. Umbridge has little to no justification for her crimes. (This does not mean that Voldemort is better than Umbridge. He is far worse.) Tragic backstories give us reasons, not excuses.

Also tbh I don't see Merope get as much hate as she should - Ok, I'm not saying I hate Merope. She has a tragic story and was the child of a horrible home. But like that doesn't mean she can basically drug someone into having a child with her.

It is possible to feel bad for the bad things that have happened to someone without excusing the bad things thar they’ve done. Voldemort was born to parents who didn’t love him, was abandoned as a baby, and never really knew love or happiness. That is tragic, and deserving of pity. He was also a monster who murdered indiscriminately and led a regime based on cruelty and bigotry. That is not acceptable. But one reality doesn’t cancel out the other.

I pity Tom Riddle Jnr, not Lord Voldemort. Tom Riddle is just a boy raised in an orphanage who was hated by Dumbledore for very little reason because Dumbledore was stuck up and didn’t realise the situation Tom was in; a lonely child who could of had a completely different life had Dumbledore and the staff taken an interest in his emotional development as well as his academic development. Lord Voldemort is simply violent, dangerous, sadistic and evil and I can feel no pity for him. As for Umbridge, I have no pity for any of her.
