The Talking Cat
Chapter 1
Amy Elizabeth Brown sat down at the kitchen table waiting for lunch. The smell of fresh spaghetti made her mouth water. Amy has had a bad day, a bad month actually, every single day something weird has been happening to her. Her cat's cage was not able to open again after she got annoyed that the cat was able to escape. Her parents thought she had just broken it and punished her. Textbooks magically opened to the page she left off, her parents every time would say it was just the wind. Everytime she would tell her parents, they wouldn't believe her. They asked her multiple times to stop with gibberish, but she just can't control it. Amy was thinking she was going insane.
Juliana, her mom, came out of the small kitchen, too tight for more than 3 people. It worked just fine since only Amy, Juliana, and Jefferson lived there. Jefferson was her step-dad. Her dad had died in a car accident when Amy was 3 years old. Amy had gotten used to calling her step-dad, dad. Amy immediately grabbed a big spoon-full of spaghetti and put it on her plate. She added some italian, white sauce and started eating.
“Ouch”
Amy shrieked when she burnt her tongue from the hot spaghetti.
“That's why you wait before eating, wait for it to cool down.”
Jefferson, Amy's dad said in a stern tone. He was angry from a fight Amy and him had last night. Amy was convinced her charger had been “brought back to life” after it stopped working and suddenly worked again. Her dad told her multiple times the power must have just gone out for a second. She argued back saying the tv hadn't gone off. They argued for a long time, back and forth. Finally, Amy decided to stop, she wasn't going to convince her dad in any way, it wasn't worth it anymore. She just wanted her dad and mom to believe her for once...
“ Maybe, just maybe, if something bigger happened, right in front of their eyes, they would believe me.”
Amy thought.
Once Amy finished her food, she sat down at the small couch in front of the tv. The apartment was so small, they had to squish everything together to make a living room. She turned on the news, she was only 10 years old, but she liked to see what was going on in the world. Her dad sat down next to her and so did her mom.
Out of nowhere, a big ball of ginger, unbrushed, fur jumped out of Amy’s lap. It was her big cat with his messy hair.
“Ouch! What the heck!”
Amy yelled as she saw a big nasty cut on the arm. The cut was bleeding pretty badly. Amy seemed like she was in pain.
“Sorry Amy. I'm just a caat, I didn't nnotice my clawws were that big! pleasee forgive mee.”
The cat spoke in a soft baby voice. It didn't seem like it was coming from the cat, the cat seemed as if it were to have a more masculine voice.
“Amy! Did the cat just-”
Her dad, stunned, was interrupted by the cat who didn't seem too bothered at all.
“O yes, i talk, you should have believed her, so many strange things happen when im close to her, she is magic! So many things happened and you didn't even think to look into it? Humans are such weird creatures.”
No one said a word, the cat sat on Amy's lap like nothing had happened. Everyone in shock about what just happened, continued watching tv. Amy really wanted to tell her parents that they should have believed her and all that, but she didn't. She was stunned that her cat talked, she knew weird things were happening to her, But this, this was next level. Did her parents finally believe her? Or did both of them think they were going insane?!
……………………….
Amy after an awkward 30 minutes of silence in front of the tv, she got up and went to her room. She walked slowly, thinking and thinking. She sat down on her beautiful small bed and thought about what just happened. She thought for what seemed ages till accidentally falling asleep. She had a dream where her cat talked in front of her classmates and she had to leave the school because everyone was now scared of her and her family. Her family had to move to a different city but news had spread. They now had to live in a middle of nowhere farm and hide for the rest of their lives.
Amy woke up shaking and sweating. Her face white, she looked like she had just seen a ghost .She jumped out of bed and looked out of the big window. It was daytime. The beautiful summer grass, the colorful flowers. Amy saw a beautiful lily and remembered why she gave the name she did to her cat. She ran downstairs to check if her dream was real. She saw her cat coming towards her and wanted to know if it was still able to talk.
“Hi cat! Are-e you okay-y? Lily can you still talk-k”
There was no response from Lily. The cat looked at her in a confused look and left to eat out of his bowl. Amy thought about how disgusting the cat's food must be, but the cat liked it, so it couldn't be that bad? Amy gave a big loud sigh of relief, Happily the cat didn't talk but that would change what happened last night.
“Amy! Hi, good morning!”
Her dad called out to her.
“Come here! Family meeting!"
Her mom said in an all too friendly voice. Her mom pointed to the living room couch and they all sat down.
“So, we all know what happened last night with the cat. Sorry for not believing you earlier. We still have no idea what it is, so be careful. We know tomorrow is your 11th birthday, so we will give you a camera you have been begging for as an apology and a gift.”
Her dad said in a sincere tone. He definitely meant it. Amy jumped up and down and ran to her room. She almost tripped but got there at the end. She pulled out her old crappy camera that couldn't even take pictures anymore and pulled out its card. She still wanted to keep her old photos. She grabbed the useless camera and threw it in the trash.
“That felt sooo good! Finally, I'll be getting a good camera!”
Amy enjoyed the rest of her day, contemplating the new camera she'll be getting tomorrow. She went to bed excitedly, she wanted to get up so badly, she wanted to celebrate. But she knew the day would come sooner if she slept. She tried to fall asleep as quickly as possible. She wanted her birthday to come soon.
The Visit From The Hogwarts Professor
Chapter 2
“Beep, Beep, Beep!”
Amy’s alarm went off multiple times very loudly.
“Why are you on! I don't have school!”
Amy yelled before getting out of bed very slowly. She was on her way to the bathroom when a thought came to her head. It was her birthday! She ran downstairs and saw her mom cooking chocolate chip pancakes, her favorite. The smell of chocolate made her awake. Her mom turned her head and saw her.
“Happy Birthday! Today will be such a good day for you! Dad has left the house to buy you a cake! We can go after lunch to the mall to buy you your camera!”
Said Amy’s mom in an excited tone. Amy jumped up and down and took a seat at the table. The table was scratched up, probably because of the cat or the fact it was so old. It was once located at her grandma's house, but once her grandma bought a new one, she decided to keep the old, scratchy table. The chair made a sound, like the one made in a horror movie door. Amy’s mom carefully put three big, fluffy pancakes onto her plate. Amy added a lot of syrup before finally eating them.
There was a loud knock at the door and Amy’s mom quickly opened it. It was Amy's step-dad holding a beautiful cake. It was a baby pink color, it was infested with sprinkles and it had a chocolate drizzle.
“What's its flavor dad?”
Amy asked before even saying hello or goodmorning.
“Vanilla of course, I know it's your favorite.”
“Thank you, thank you! I'm so excited”
Amy said cheerfully. Her dad placed the cake on top of the table before closing the door. Amy couldn't stop staring at the cake, nor could her cat apparently who looked as if were ready to steal it. The family was now sitting down enjoying pancakes, where there was suddenly a knock at the door.
“Are you expecting anyone mum?”
Said Amy in a concerned, but curious tone.
“No, this seems quite weird.”
Amy’s mom said, wondering who it might be. There was a knock again. Amy’s step-dad got up from his seat and opened the door. Outside stood a tall, skiny, weird looking man outside. He had a long rope, a very colorful one. He had black hair, not much of it, he looked like he was about sixty. He had a long black mustache. Without warning, he brushed through Amy's dad and made himself comfortable on the living room couch.
“O hello, Im professor Lexter, from Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. I have come here to give Miss Amy her letter. I've also come to explain a couple things to you three who might be extremely confused.’’
Professor Lexter said in a high pitched voice. The three stood there, motionless trying to process what just happened. After the professor noticed they were not moving or doing anything, he extended his hand with the letter to amy. Amy grabbed the letter and started reading it to herself instantly.
“What does this mean, witchcraft; wizardry!? what is going on?!”
Her dad said with a concerned voice.
“A, yes, i was expecting this from you muggles-”
He was interrupted by Amy's mom.
“Muggles, what are muggles, you mean us?”
She said in an angry but curious tone. Professor Lexter waited a couple seconds before finally saying.
“Muggles, that is what we call people who don't have any magic. Your daughter is a witch, this means a distant relative of yours was a squib. A squib is a person who was born into a magical family without any powers. Have you seen anything unusual lately, weird things happening when your daughter is around?”
Mr. Brown thought for a while before finally saying.
“Yes! When Amy made the cat talk, or when her charger suddenly started working again after being broken! I'm sorry for not believing you!”
Professor lexter looked at amy pleased. He took the letter that Amy had already finished reading and that was now saying on the table and handed it to her parents. Miss. Brown took the letter politely and started reading it out loud.
“ Dear Miss Amy, we are glad to announce you have been accepted into Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. Students shall go on the Hogwarts express on the first of september. Please pay your utmost attention to the list of requirements attached to the letter. We very much look forward to your arrival at our school.”
“O yes, thank you for reading it. Hogwarts is a school for only wizards that will teach them how to control and develop their magic. It is a boarding school, she may return for winter break, spring break, and the whole summer.’’
Amy’s mom looked a little bit upset at hearing it was a boarding school. Her mom was always over protective of her since she was an only child. Amy’s mom and dad carefully listened to everything Professor lexter told them about the wizard world. He left after an hour or so. Amy’s parents reluctantly agreed to let their only child go to this wizarding school.
“So, I'm not insane, I'm just a witch. I'm not even going to be able to use my camera. I won't be able to use my phone or anything muggle really. I will miss my parents too, I will barely be able to see them through the year. How am I a witch, Me? A witch, it shouldn't be surprising, all those weird things happen to me all the time. Just be happy you're not going insane right? Right? What a birthday…"
And so Amy thought while she was climbing the stairs back to her bedroom. Amy didn't leave her bedroom for the rest of the day. She was half shocked and half relieved she wasn't going insane. She fell asleep quite early, half thinking what just happened was just a dream.
