Why didn’t the basilisk as it were, “finish off” her victims after all most if not all of them were alone when attacked why not just idk bite them in two.

The out of universe reason for this is that, at this point, the books are relatively lighthearted children's fantasy horror. And for those that says it’s not horror Quirrel’s true allegiance and what he had on the back of his head at the end Of Philosopher’s stone is still terrifying. Killing off 12 year olds and one 16 year old and an unpleasant but beloved by her owner cat, isn’t really lighthearted in tone lol.

But what could be the in universe reason for it?

The plot twist at the end was unexpected, to say the least.

I’d watched a timeline vid but because almost everything the narrator was saying went over my head, I didn’t realise the Quirrel was the bad guy all along T_T
