If we assume they were in one class together as both of them liked potions and likely took it in 6th and 7th year too. Or maybe there were seperate N.E.W.T. groups if more people chose potions in later years, but who knows?

Until I started writing my ootp re-write I was under the impression that Hogwarts students took O.W.L.s in both fifth year and sixth year, and N.E.W.T.s in their final year, but then I read Snape saying that his class next year (sixth) will be a N.E.W.T.s class, and Fred and George (who are seventh years) mentioned that they intend to take some N.E.W.T.s at the end of that year (although they'll actually drop out before hand).
I just want some clarification, do students who pass their O.W.L.s at the end of their fifth year go on to do two years of N.E.W.T.s or am I missing something.
