Platform Nine and Three-Quarters

This is a classic question but I didn't find a post devoted to it. Platform 9¾ is located at King's Cross Station in London. Wizards go to it through a solid barrier (brick pillar or metal) between Platforms 9 and 10.

Where exactly is the platform? Is it in the pillar with an extended space inside? Is it somewhere by side of the station and the barrier works like a wormhole portal? From where does the express leave the station? There would have to be a mostly unused track connecting to the north railroad from London. And a "nostalgic" train crossing the country attracts attention, maybe ignore spells would have to be applied.

It stops making sense the moment you start to think. The (film) audience who aren't fans must be confused. Many less attentive people even think to this day that Harry Potter enters a paralel dimension when running into that wall and all events after that take place in it.

The wizarding world has these problems with space a lot, this one is probably the worst. It began as a fable for children and developed into a serious low-fantasy world. So, it doesn't have clear rules.

Alicia stumbled forwards abruptly as she fell through into platform 9 and 3 quarters. Her battered 80s suitcase, which she had inherited from her mother, was clenched firmly in her hands, and as she composed herself enough to look around the vast station, she held her chin high. This was it; she would be going to Hogwarts. Alicia could feel her heart in her throat, the blood pounding in her ears as she took a wary step forwards, her footsteps inaudible over the roar of the crowd. The Hogwarts express, which, Alicia could see—through the window panes—was already clogged with children, suitcases clasped in hands, would leave in a few minutes. Taking a deep inhale of breath, as to steady her nerves, she took a broad step in the direction of the train, her auburn tresses flowing behind her in the gentle morning breeze. Only one, clear thought was prominent in her mind;

I’m coming, Hogwarts. Be ready for my story.

‘I’ll send lots of owls, I promise,’ Aislinn reassured, embracing her mother for what seemed like the one-hundredth time. Her freshly-bought suitcase, which was full to bursting, was held firmly in her hand, the leather basking in ribbons of sunlight. Her mother pursed her lips thoughtfully, as if she were to protest against Aislinn leaving her, but then her expression fell.

‘Okay, my love. I’ll send lots of letters as well. And I’ve also packed your favourite books in there, too, just in case the reading material at Hogwarts can’t feed your insatiable mind. Oh, why did you have to get the letter, why—’ she was abruptly cut of by a shrill whistle. Aislinn’s expression was contorted with pain for her mother, but she quickly leaned forwards, gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, and turned to face the train, where students had already made a beeline towards the entrances. ‘I promise I’ll keep in touch,’ she reassured for the final time, and she took a step towards the Hogwarts express, excitement trickling through her veins.

Jae straightened her hat, which had previously sat slightly askew upon her mess of hazel-coloured hair. A surge of eagerness shuddered through her as she looked up at the shining train before her; The Hogwarts Express. Ever since she had received a letter of acceptance from the institution itself, nothing but the school—Hogwarts—had been on her mind. Nobody in her family had heard of Hogwarts before—but the strangest thing was that she couldn’t find it on any map, anywhere. Despite this, Jae had been insistent on going. She wanted to learn magic; and from what the letter had informed her, Hogwarts was the perfect place to begin.

A feeling akin to a great sense of anticipation washed over Jae as she looked forwards—this was the beginning of her new life as a witch. Though she would possibly begin this journey alone, due to her mothers inability to travel into the platform, she would incontrovertibly create friends along the way. Her eyes sparkling with a sensation she could not describe, the young girl walked towards the train, her story already beginning.

Tenes smiled softly to herself as she walked past a group of year ones conversing in hushed voices. This was the beginning of her fifth year at Hogwarts, and she had received the letter that she would be prefect only a few weeks into the Summer holidays. This was a wonderful opportunity to prove herself to the school. They had possibly misjudged her previous years, where she had not had as much self-discipline as she had mustered in her fourth year, but that would all come to a swift end. She would achieve higher scores than ever before, surpassing every classmate, and if anyone were to step a foot out of line, she would know. This year, Tenes finally had the opportunity to show the school what she was truly made of.

As she herded a group of year one girls into the train, who had been previously clinging to their parents, streams of tears soaking their skin, she looked back at the station, hefting her suitcase onto the sturdily-made wooden floor of the train. Before she had a chance to feel a fleck of sadness for the home she was leaving behind, a voice shouted her name, and she disappeared into the sea of children.

Clara frowned as her mother recited all the things she most certainly must not do. She had never particularly enjoyed lectures, but this one was purposefully long. Cress, the family butler, waited patiently beside Clara, two identical suitcases clasped in each hand. When her mother eventually ended, (with a sharp, “Do not get into Gryffindor!”) she folded her hands and looked expectantly at her daughter, who stood tall in her pristine Hogwarts uniform. It wasn’t expected to appear in your uniform, but, nonetheless, Clara’s mother had made it absolutely certain that Clara would look her best, whether her daughter wanted to appear dressed in uniform—or not. ‘Yes, mother,’ Clara replied, holding her tongue to stop her taking her frustration out. ‘Now off you go, you don’t want to be late,’ her mother added, nodding to Cress, who passed the suitcases over to Clara. The girl took them, half-heartedly turning towards the train, a question burned into her mind;

Would it be correct to dread the year to come?

Jenny, despite the fact the Hogwarts express would be departing in a few, short minutes, was curled up against a pillar, a Doctor Who book clasped between her two hands. She was completely, unreservedly immersed in the story. Her auburn hair was slightly tousled in the breeze that ambled through the air, though she didn’t appear to notice whenever locks of her hair would slowly rise, but fall abruptly down. Her eyes scanned the pages, the only noise that she could hear the thumping of her heart behind her chest.

A suitcase lay beside her, looking like the owner had crammed as many items as possible, though had slight troubles trying to close the lid. Jenny peered closer at the pages, nibbling on a small cookie. Suddenly, it broke apart, and the crumbs scattered across the pages, some falling onto the floor. Jenny hung her head back, exhaling deeply with frustration. Picking up the book, and brushing the crumbs from it, she flicked open her suitcase and shoved the book inside, looking up at the painted train spewing tendrils of smoke into the air. As she stood up, pulling the suitcase onto its wheels, she strode forwards, not looking back.

River screwed her eyes up as her mother peppered her face with kisses.

‘Mum, I’m fine,’ she insisted, unwrapping the scarf her mother had persisted that she wore. The Hogwarts express would be leaving in five minutes, yet her mother had not finished saying goodbye.

‘Oh, babe; I’m going to miss you so much,’ her mother sighed, and River turned her head towards the gleaming red train readying to depart. ‘I love you too,’ River replied automatically, picking up her suitcase as a sign she was ready to board the train. Her mother ignored this blaring hint, instead reaching forwards and grabbing River’s shoulder. ‘Babe, no, one more goodbye,’ she implored, and her daughter sighed inwardly. ‘Mum, we’ve done this dance—’ River replied, shaking her head and continuing to walk towards the edge of the platform.

‘Okay, River, I love you,’ her mother called, blowing kisses. River shouted back, not turning her head. Within a few seconds, she had disappeared inside the train.

Most people thought having a spider as a pet was a strange thing. William was not one of those people.

Tied to his ring finger was a piece of string, that was tied around his abnormally large pet spider, Naomi, who had been enchanted when William first got her. Naomi scuttled across the floor, her limbs flying all over the place. William suddenly looked up as a shrill whistle rattled inside his head, alerting anyone who had not yet entered the train.

‘Well, Naomi, back in the pot,’ he said, pulling a large, rectangular glass box from his pocket and popping the spider inside. Then, he turned around, extending the suitcase handle and pulling it onto its four wheels.

Slowly, he ambled his way towards the train, feelings of excitement and worry pulsing through his blood.

Canis sipped his iced pumpkin juice as he leant against a pillar, looking at the groups of students filtering into the train.

‘This is it,’ he muttered to himself, so quietly that nobody but him would hear his murmers. ‘This is it, Canis, you’re going to Hogwarts,’ the boy added, inhaling deeply. Gently, he set the cup down beside him, smacking his lips. The drink always helped him relax, no matter the situation.

Humming a soft tune to himself, Canis folded his arms and relaxed his head, knowing full well that the train would be departing soon. He wasn’t ready to enter just yet; the boy enjoyed making an entrance, and being the last one to enter the train would certainly make people remember him. Bending down, he tucked his drink inside his suitcase and zipped the lid back up, hoisting the suitcase handle over his arm. He was Canis Finnigan. And Hogwarts better be ready.

So, you know how Lord Voldemort has no nose? I have a theory that since he used to have a nose, he had a little splinching accident and that removed his nose...or he just ran hard into the wall of platform 9 3/4. Any Thoughts?

"Get up, all of you!"

Kiera pulled herself out of bed slowly, barely awake. "Come on now," Professor Kilenburg barked. "You shan't be late to Hogwarts." Kiera cracked a smile. Maybe, just maybe, she would find her people. She began packing her bags and getting dressed. Halfway through the process, Professor Kilenburg poked her head into the bedroom. "We're leaving, girls." Giselle and Kiera began rapidly stuffing their bags full of clothes, makeup, and newly-bought goods from Diagon Alley. "Let's go," Said Giselle, grinning. Kiera couldn't help but grin back.

Tomie sighed happily. She smiled all the way to King's Cross Station. And when she got there, she still smiled. There was only one thing that could make her smile like that. Célia. They were definitely soulmates. She was thinking of all this and didn't even notice when she smashed straight into a brick pillar. Expecting to feel pain, she winced. However, she realized she had stepped into the magic portal to Platform 9 and 3/4! Students in black robes walked around, pushing trolleys and carrying owls. She turned her chin upwards. She was better than all of these fools. They were incompetent. She was the only one who could perform magic with her hands. She flinched when she spotted a girl with a face full of acne and greasy, bright pink hair. She would just have to get used to freaks.

As soon as she stepped onto the train, she was breathing magic. She was seeing magic, too. Everything was so magical. And it was magical as it was powerful. She sat down next to a petite blond girl. "Hello," The girl said. "Hi," Célia responded. The blond girl's eyes widened. "I-i... you are... you are a transfer student!" She exclaimed. "I'm Charlea, Charlea Adler, Sixth Year, Gryffindor." Célia smiled tightly. "I am Célia," she said. Célia glanced around the empty compartment. Slowly, she opened her briefcase and unveiled a wand. She flicked it casually at Charlea. Her mouth was instantly bound by a hankerchief. The room was illuminated in a bright green color. "Listen to me." Célia hissed, pacing around Charlea. "You do what I say. Always. And if you don't, things that are much worse will happen to you. Charlea's mind fled to a billion dark places as she wondered what Célia would do to her. Charlea nodded, forced to agree. Célia removed the hankerchief with a flick of her wand and sashayed away as if none of this had ever taken place.

Giselle sat next to two twins, Beau and Bonnie. They were both dark-haired and funny. Giselle flirted with Beau a lot, and Kiera bonded with Bonnie instantly. "What is it like?" Beau asked. "In France," Giselle thought for a moment, trying to come up with a witty remark. "It is very French," She replied. "Well obviously," Beau said. Giselle winced. Not a good response. "Okay, well it is always warm. There is a bakery on every street. You see cyclists and flags wave everywhere. It is noisy, yet peaceful." Said Giselle. Beau was staring out of the window. Giselle turned to look along with him. Settled behind a lake, was a beautiful castle that they were now barreling towards. "Wow," Giselle muttered. "That's what I thought the first time I saw it." Beau said. "It still amazes me every time." Giselle smiled at him. And for the first time, he smiled back.

He has the flattest nose I have ever seen. Almost like he ran into the wrong wall at the station, if you know what I mean. I was going to compare him to Voldemort but then I would feel bad and, well, Voldy doesn't have a nose and his nostrils are more slit and serpent like. But, seriously, though... 😹

And here's what I got in the platform 9 3/4 store

Honestly this guy is kinda too mean, in the first film when Harry said “excuse me can you tell me where I might find platform 9 1/3 please?”

And he replied “fink you’re being funny do you?” And then walked off, shaking his head.

I mean Harry was a little boy in the train station by himself and he was polite enough. The man could’ve at least later said and pointed to platform 9 & 10. (Just in case he wasn’t being funny, or “do you have that right? Let me see your ticket”)

Which I know if he saw the ticket he would think it was a joke, but still take away the magic stuff, Harry was genuine in needing help.

(Just Thought nr Hagrid should’ve thought about this, Harry wouldn’t of known you’re meant to run through the wall)

2nd in CoS - When Harry and Ron ran into the wall and toppled over, and the porter guy said “Oi What fo you fink you’re doing?”

Like they could’ve been hurt, he could’ve at least asked if they were okay 😂

He was angry at them for falling

He clearly hates kids lol

And clearly assumes the worst of them

I mean imagine if you didn’t yet know you were a witch or wizard (you were born in a muggle family) and you were just at the station and you leaned on that would you fall through?

Or can you only pass the wall by running through it?

I’m guessing other wizards would find another way of magical transportation but like what if you were in a muggle family?

I've been trying to figure this our for such a long time which country is 4 privet drive located in? And platform nine and three quarters at the kings cross station thing, where's that??? and are they all located in the UK? is that a country and is hogwarts in there too? AAAAAAAAH IM SOOOOO CONFUSED

You know in CoS the border between Platform 10 and 9 (you know, Platform 9 3/4) doesn't let Harry and Ron in after eleven? Well, what if you're halfway through it? What if it strikes eleven when, like, your arms are through? Are you stuck there? Does it still let you in? Does it repel you? HELP
