Now that you ask I really wonder why Ron and Hermione are together in the first place...

She could be with anyone! Or she could just be single and independent... why Ron? Did they really show love at all? Yeah ok maybe in GoF he was jealous and in H-Bp he murmured her name and it was Hermione's turn to be jealous. But still...

I don't agree that he was possessed. Salazar was a pure blood and was against muggles and muggle-borns so when the students started getting enrolled Godric Griffindor allowed the muggle- Borns in but Salazar was against it so they had a fight and Salazar left!

I think it works like the thestrals. Only Luna and harry had seen people die. Ans as someone said above , the person who died sensed that they were there and were drawing them towards the veil... I don't know why though.
