Chapter 3: Dementor and Professor:
Once back from her run after the strange dog Violette was lucky not to miss the Hogwarts Express and get yelled at by her friends who didn't appreciate her abandoning them for a big dog, cute, but a dog nevertheless.
The three girls got on the train to look for a compartment, which they did not have much trouble finding as the train was almost empty. As usual Violette sat down next to the window to enjoy the view and her two friends next to her. Madison let out a huge sigh as she sat down.
- Let's hope this year will be... quieter... she said, sounding exhausted.
It must be said that since their first year the girls hadn't had a moment's rest, first year had been... A first year, which is never really very pleasant, (not to mention that a teacher had died and had been possessed by the dark lord himself) and during the second year a monster had escaped from who knows where and had started petrifying people for who knows what reason...
- Me too... Julia added, and we have the new subjects this year...
The girl beside the window suddenly gasped at the remark, she had completely forgotten about the new subjects... She sighed as she thought about the fact that this would mean more homework for her and she didn't feel like it AT ALL, even though no matter who gave it to her or how much Violette always felt obliged to finish it and hand it in.
- Do you think that Ravenclaw ghost is still going to follow you around Violette? Asked Julia, changing the subject when she saw her friend sigh. "The Ravenclaw ghost Julia was talking about was named Pauly Pettigrew, and since first year she had been desperately following Greengrass around. It seemed like she wanted to tell her something, but Violette didn't care what she wanted, she was scared to death of ghosts and she had enough of them on her tail every day.
- I really hope not... she replied, still scanning the landscape that would soon pass before her eyes. I know it runs in the family to be chased by a ton of ghosts, but this one is particularly scary...
The reason for this was perhaps that Pauly looked like a real madwoman, her hair was messy and torn in some places, her dress was tattered and above all she was always casting worried glances to all sides, twisting her fingers as if she thought someone could attack her at any moment.
No one could say whether it was this way of acting that made Peeves, the school's striking spirit, play so many tricks on her, whether it was Peeves' constant tricks that made her like this, or whether she had always been strange.
The discussion drifted on to other subjects and gradually a smile reformed on Violette's lips, she forgot about her awful family and even the man with the sad eyes in the newspaper and the dog at the station.
The three girls were so engrossed in their conversations that no one noticed the man with the patched clothes Violette had run into at the station and the last three passengers, who were known to everyone.
After a long time the sky turned black outside and a driving rain had started to fall. The conversation had stopped, as had the train. At the little jolt the train made when it stopped Cream suddenly raised her head from the book in which she had been immersed for some time and in her small voice asked "Are we there yet?" At his words Violette tried, without success, to look around in the hope of seeing Hogwarts Castle, but she saw nothing.
Suddenly she felt a great cold, which she was not used to as she was not very chilly.
- Don't you think it's a bit cold...? she asked as she crouched down in her seat, her friends answered with a simple nod.
Then she looked out of the window again, but what she saw made her flinch, movements of cloaks in the dark, but no feet, no apparent head, but a hand, a hand that was not human. With great haste the girl turned her head away from the icy glass, lifting her forehead from it. The sight of that hand gave her goose bumps, it wasn't human, but it wasn't a ghost's either (Violette had seen them often enough to know that at first glance), and that didn't reassure her at all. She felt her heartbeat quicken with her breathing, the cold creeping into her like an icy snake.
She felt Julia's reassuring hand on her shoulder and, after breathing normally again, she turned to smile at her. The three girls remained silent for a moment but an unexpected sound broke it, the sound of the compartment door opening. Violette recognised the figure instantly, a large thing wrapped in capes that almost touched the ceiling but not the floor.
The girl froze, or rather paralysed completely. She felt unable to breathe and she felt as if her head had been put under a waterfall, soon a white fog blurred her vision.
And she heard screams and cries, the screams of a woman, but between the cries of pain she could distinguish reassuring words like: "Don't worry" or "I'm fine" or, and these were the worst, "It doesn't matter if I don't make it, the most important thing is you Violette... ". Violette didn't recognise the voice she was hearing but she was sure it belonged to someone she knew well, someone she loved. She wanted to help this person but her body refused to respond.
Then she heard Cream calling her. Her head fell against the cold glass beside her, she wondered if she had been dreaming...
- Are you alright?! asked the braided girl, grabbing her hands.
- Er, yes... Violette stammered as she sat up, and then she saw someone who wasn't in the carriage before she fainted, the man from the station, she exclaimed unintentionally! He was standing right next to Julia and seemed relieved to see Violette get up. But... What are you doing here, exclaimed the girl, staring at him! The man didn't answer and just smiled at her and handed her a piece of chocolate. She grabbed it and he left the carriage without a word.
The three girls looked at him incredulously, then Julia and Madison turned back to their friend who was eating her chocolate with irritation still staring at the door.
- Do you know him, the taller girl asked?
- Not exactly. Violette replied, her eyebrows drawing dangerously close.
- You... You met him on the platform, didn't you? said Cream. Suddenly Violette froze and her face took on an incredibly serious look, as if she was looking for the answer to a horribly complicated riddle.
- Yes... But I wonder what he's doing on the train... Cream and Julia looked at each other.
- Violette... Madi began, he's a teacher...
There was a long pause during which Violette widened her eyes and continued to eat her piece of chocolate, staring at her friend as if she had just revealed the meaning of life to her.
- I'm very, very stupid, aren't I...? she asked her friends.
- Oh no, you're fine, replied Julia before the other had time to say anything! But that doesn't stop you from eating the chocolate that a guy you hardly know gave you.
