It's still mean of Snape to call other Muggle-borns "Mudblood", and he's practicing Dark Arts. Lily was partly wrong for not forgiving him but still reasonable for cutting off Snape due to his behaviour. Snape didn't change for Lily after years of friendship, he had too many chances. James, matured and willing to change for his love.
