(Let me just say that Draco and I are very alike and I can see quite well from his perspective, unlike many people who think Harry is the golden angel who can do no wrong.)

Draco tried to be friends with Harry in first year, but Harry rejected him quite rudely. I know you'll say that's because Draco was racist towards Ron, but they were eleven and Draco had learned that from his father. Draco was quite hurt by this, and because it was Harry freaking Potter and his father was a Death Eater, he kind of had to be mean to Harry. You can see in HBP and TDH that Draco regrets following his father and Voldemort's orders. He was very oppressed and badly influenced.

Drarry could have been canon, but it wasn't, because a) HP is set in the 1980s/1990s before homosexuality was accepted, b) JKR is JKR, and c) because Draco was very much not allowed to like Harry. They couldn't've had a secret relationship at school because Voldemort was a Legilimens and could read Draco's mind.
