:Um, there's something I'd like to ask that is somewhat relevant to this thread; since what's being displayed on the new spoiler notice header is by inserting short codes; is there a master list of what those short codes stand for? I mean, I'm assuming they are all located in :Category:Appearance templates, and I don't know if it's just me, but sometimes it's kind of hard to immediately recognize what those abbreviations represent. I'm hoping, as time goes by, I'd eventually be able to memorize them, but currently I've found myself repeatedly checking what MHP, MPF and a few others, are. I know that for all of them, I can check what they are by clicking into the templates individually, but it might be helpful to have a list of the "potentially most likely would be used in the spoiler header" provided in the header template usage, so users can reference it if they are unsure what to insert.

:That being said, maybe I'm just imagining a scenario that would never happen and that people who would use the template are all already familiar with the short codes on this wiki. lol It's just a thought. =D

::Just realized the Japanese and Chinese HPWs somewhat had the type of reference guide (people like me who are bad at memorizing stuff would appreciate) so that most if not all of them can be viewed at once:

::*:ja:カテゴリ:登場テンプレート
  +
::*:zh:Category:原文出处模板 (partial)
  +
::**The ZH categorization of further filtering out :Category:Appearance templates has some perks, cuz technically there's more than one type of appearance templates in this category; from them the likes of Mention and 1st are located at :zh:Category:出处模板, and :zh:Category:原文出处模板 is just focused on the series' short codes; though perhaps the extra category is nessasary due to the way they setup their templates (1 chapter per template, it seems.) Nevertheless, as the EN template category is populating, figured it can be considered.

::Back on track, was surprised it has in fact been practised elsewhere, so figured a visualization of what I mean might be helpful, and if it could also be added onto the EN category (in English, of course lol.) --<span style="color:#00008B;">S</span><span style="color:#3333A2;">a</span><span style="color:#6666B9;">m</span><span style="color:#9999D1;">m</span><span style="color:#CCCCE8;">m</span><span style="color:#000038;">✦✧</span>(talk) 08:25, November 16, 2018 (UTC)

Forums: Index > The Wizengamot > Condensed spoiler notice

CosmicChronos posted an interesting blog entry highlighting some potential interaction concerns with some articles. One of the issues noted is the excess of Spoiler notices on some pages (such as Albus Dumbledore). While we need to discuss proper timeframes for the various spoilers, there will still be times where multiple spoiler notices are needed (such as now with the overlapping releases of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery content). To that end I have created a generalized spoiler template, that can be passed the short codes to list out the various spoiler links in a single tophat that may apply.

Please take a look and provide feedback here. If someone has a better wizarding warning symbol they like, please let me know. If not can someone (Seth?) more familiar with wikia's transparent images add the transparency for the MinaLima pointing hand? It's transparent in my editor & on my system (and in the thumbnail on wikia?) but not in the main image. Not sure what gives.

Once we finalize the condensed spoiler format, the bot can go through and replace the various spoilers notices. Thanks --Ironyak1 (talk) 21:47, November 11, 2018 (UTC)

Great work, always two steps ahead! I was on my way to suggest a condensed spoiler tophat myself after reading the document from Community Council myself.
The pointing hand picture is transparent on my end, I don't know what the issue is. The template looks great.
On a related topic, we really ought to start thinking about removing old, and by now, pretty much useless spoiler tags (i.e. Pottermore, Wonderbook, Wonderpotions, and, to be perfectly honest, even CursedChildSpoiler and FantasticBeastsSpoiler). --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 01:32, November 12, 2018 (UTC)
About the image; there was still a "grey filter" on the original upload; if you add a background layer and paint it a colour, you'd be able to tell it wasn't totally transparent. Not sure why that happened, so I've manually selected the "not-actually-clear" areas and deleted them. You can compare the to uploads to see. I didn't spend too much time on it so there's actually still some grey filters present.
I think the new template is a great solution for the clutter when an article have spoilers from multiple sources; but I don't think the old ones need to completely go away, since they still can be used on articles that only contain spoilers from one particular source. The only modification I can think of, and I assume it hadn't been added because the template is still in beta, is the inclusion of Category:Articles with information from Fantastic Beasts: Cases from the Wizarding World and the likes. I actually do use those hidden categories, so I'd be sad to see them gone.
As a visual person, I tried to play around and utterly failed at making it work, but at least I know what seemed like a good idea in my head doesn't actually translate well lmao. The below is the outcome, just in case people want to experiment around more, but suffice to say, in terms of reducing the height of the notice template, Ironyak1's version is more efficient.

Thanks for the feedback all! I agree with retiring/removing the old spoiler templates listed and will put the bot on over the next few days. However, I also find the "Articles with info from..." categories useful, so was looking to move them into the short code temples (e.g. PS, CC, etc) as it seems these categories should include all related articles for each source, not just those that have a spoiler warning. Let me know if anyone can think of a reason NOT to tie these categories to all their articles via the short code templates used in Appearances.
Thanks for fixing the image Sammm鯊 - was using a new tool on my laptop so not sure from, where the issue arose. Looks a lot better! Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 06:52, November 12, 2018 (UTC)
BTW, idk if you have followed up CosmicChronos's comment on the blogpost, I think the combined header is in good shape, and although it looks like currently I'm the only one who'd like some visual differentiation (not a need, but if there's that option, I'd pick the one with imagery lol,) I think the addition of w:c:dev:EraIcons may do the job of having images and categories, though it'd be, like I said, an "addition" to the improved spoiler header, so I can also see it as unnecessary, since, if it can be done in one go, unless the difference is monumental, there's no need to do it in two, etc.
That being said, I'm actually a little surprised that the script is okay for site-wise usage, for the Staff usually are pretty strict on what's in the area above the hairline before the article body. If not wanting to risk it, this display reminds me a lot of w:c:ouat:Template:Icons (with the use of w:c:ouat:Template:Icons/SubIcon and w:c:ouat:MediaWiki:Common.js/icons.js); I'm not sure what happened, but previously, all icons would neatly stack atop of infoboxes should the articles have one. Kind of like Protected-small, FA, and TT; just that it's done in this joint "icon" template instead of several separate templates.
I'm not saying "go for the script" or "go for the other method used elsewhere," but because it strikes me that there's already something similar going on on HPW, so perhaps it could be considered to consolidate while also solving something. It's just a thought. =D

So about ~3200 edits later, the old tophat spoiler notices have been scrubbed from the articles, with new ones for Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery or Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald added as needed. (Yeah, sorry Dobby but you'd never get a sock from me - more house-elfs I say! ;)

Based on some direct discussion with Sammm鯊 about the usefulness of the 'Articles with information from..." categories, I'm prototyping moving Category:Articles with information from Pottermore from the (now defunct) spoiler notice directly to PM so it is added to any main space article which uses this template in Appearances and refs and such. (thanks for catching the NAMESPACE filter issue Sammm鯊!). I've also crosslinked to Category:Images from Pottermore on the category pages so that it's easy to jump between each list of items for the related source. Please take a look and let me know if there are any thoughts as this approach could be used for all our sources so it's clear which articles have information or images from each source.

I need to spend some time looking at the Editing Notices/Icons options, but will start a new thread on that topic as time allows. Cheers for now --Ironyak1 (talk) 17:40, November 15, 2018 (UTC)
