Biografia
Kształcił się w Wrekin College w Wellington, następnie studiował aktorstwo w The Central School of Speech and Drama (1967–1970)[. Jako aktor teatralny zaczął regularnie występować na początku lat 70., głównie na scenach w Birmingham i Londynie[. W filmie debiutował w The Great Waltz u boku m.in. Horsta Buchholza, wcielając się w postać Josefa Straussa. W 1976 zagrał główną rolę w niemieckim thrillerze Albino, w którym pojawił się także Christopher Lee. W 1979 odegrał postać Teignmoutha Melvilla w poświęconym bitwie pod Isandlwaną filmie wojennym Zulu Dawn, którego był również współproducentem. Wcielił się w Heroda Agryppę w Ja, Klaudiusz, w Guillaume'a d'Estouteville w Konklawe oraz w Sykstusa IV w Demonach Da Vinci. Zagrał także w takich produkcjach jak Dziennik Bridget Jones i jego sequel Bridget Jones: W pogoni za rozumem, Agent Cody Banks 2: Cel Londyn, Hitman oraz serial Downton Abbey. W 2016 dołączył do obsady Gry o tron w roli Randylla Tarly'ego.
