This individual was a wizard and a Hufflepuff student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[6]
Biography[]
Before attending Hogwarts, he visited Hogsmeade and bought a notebook, which he then took to school.[6]
Hogwarts years[]
He began attending Hogwarts in 1981 and was sorted into Hufflepuff house.[6] He got immediately impressed by many things in the castle, like the Library and the Great Lake. He wrote in his diary often about the things he liked and what he had seen, like how big the Giant Squid was.[2]
In his third year, he became friends with a Gryffindor boy in his same year, named Edgar Hexsmith. Edgar was at the top of every class and was very popular and admired by many students, and he also admired him. Edgar gifted him a full set of Gobstones even though they had just met and they played together near the Great Lake on some occasions.[2] After Edgar lost a Quidditch match against the Slytherin Quidditch team, this student began to notice a change in him, and soon after, Edgar left the Gryffindor Quidditch team.[7]
Edgar was a very proficient player of Gobstones; unbeknownst to everyone, he had enchanted his pieces with a cheating charm. To prove that he could be someone whom Edgar could call a friend, this individual practised Gobstones relentlessly, following Edgar's motto "A full coin pouch is earned, not conjured". Later, they participated in the Hogwarts Gobstones Tournament,[4] which attracted a lot of viewers who expected Edgar to win. In the final match, the student faced Edgar, and countered all his moves flawlessly and won the tournament. Soon after, the idea that he had cheated began to spread, and eventually an investigation was launched, but never reached a conclusion.[8]
Winning the tournament had the opposite effect that this individual had expected as everyone thought he had cheated, and he was afraid that Edgar thought the same.[9] He wrote a letter asking him not to believe the rumours and that he wanted to remain being his friend.[4] Edgar responded by asking him to join him for a little stroll beneath the Black Lake after curfew. Edgar pushed him to go deeper and deeper, and he never resurfaced. After a whole day, Edgar went into the lake to look for him, wanting to teach him a lesson for embarrassing him at the tournament. Edgar realised that the champion had indeed gone deeper and got himself dragged under by a torrent. Edgar eventually found his robes on the lake's floor and used a Transfiguration spell to change their colours to ensure that no one found out what happened to the boy.[10]
Besides his notes, he also left some coded recordings that were broadcasting at Hogwarts and could be picked up by selecting the right code on a Wizardry Radio.[7]
