- The Potters and Granger-Weasleys discover that Ted Lupin and Victoire Weasley are kissing.[1]
- Rose Granger-Weasley is sorted into Gryffindor, and Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy are sorted into Slytherin. They begin their first year. Scorpius is very shy and reclusive.[2]

- 27 January - John Hurt, the actor who portrayed Garrick Ollivander in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (film), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (film), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (film), died of pancreatic cancer.
- 6 March - Jim Tavaré, the actor who portrayed Tom in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, suffered numerous injuries in a head-on car collision.[3]
