Abigail Grey[7] was a half-blood witch who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the early 2010s.[5]
Biography[]
Early life[]
When she was very young, Abigail noticed her father would run off every month. One night, she followed him into the forest and discovered he was a werewolf. She managed to escape with the help of her mother, but was bitten in the process and infected with lycanthropy.
Her father was devastated to learn what he had done to her and, afraid he would attack someone else or harm his wife in the future, he decided to leave. Abigail lost touch with him. At first, she was angry at her situation, but she eventually learned how to live with it.[4]
Hogwarts years[]
Abigail was attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 2010–2011 school year where she was sorted into Gryffindor house.[5]
Problems with Renka[]
In December, Abigail was in Hogsmeade when she heard Renka Rabblehauser warning the villagers about the dangers of werewolves. She was very upset and confronted her, telling her that werewolves were not "mindless beasts" or villains. She pointed out they were humans and could not have caused the recent problems the village was having like a strange mist or break-ins. Renka argued back and a fellow Hogwarts student intervened to support Abigail. However, Renka wrote them both off as naive students and Abigail ran away in tears.[5]
The student followed her and comforted her. Back at Hogwarts, the student realised Abigail was following them around. Abigail told them nobody had ever supported her before. She told them how Professor McGonagall was considering banning the students from visiting Hogsmeade until the danger had died down. They agreed to help the student investigate what was really causing the problems, but that she had to be back before dark.
In the Three Broomsticks Inn, they watched when Renka, shortly after walking in, was ordered to leave by Rosmerta. They asked the villagers around for any details they had on the recent events. However, Abigail ran off when she realised it was dark. The student tried to catch up with her only to discover a werewolf in a cave wearing Abigail's scarf, and worried that it had hurt her, not realising that the werewolf was Abigail herself.[5]
The student followed the werewolf to the Shrieking Shack where they realised with Daniel and Ivy that the werewolf was Abigail herself. She had taken a Wolfsbane Potion and was sleeping in a room. Instead of waking her up, they left her note telling her it was okay and to meet them the next day. Abigail met the student in the morning where she told them she was grateful for them keeping her secret and being understanding. She answered their questions about her condition and told them about her father who she was trying to reconnect with. She hadn't received a response and wanted to investigate her father's whereabouts but was worried about asking too many questions. The student agreed to help her in Hogsmeade.[8]
While they were in Hogsmeade, they noticed a crowd gathering and asked a resident what was happening. She told them there had been another round of break-ins the night before and that Renka claimed she was also attacked in her own shop. They argued with Renka who was blaming werewolves, with Abigail telling her they were victims of a disease and could control it with the Wolfsbane Potion. Renka thought it was interesting that Abigail cared that much about werewolves and wondered if there was a reason for that. Abigail decided to leave and Renka told her they should go back to the safety of their castle and leave the werewolves to her.[8]
Aberforth Dumbledore arrived and told Renka to stop. When she left, he confronted Abigail and the student, telling them they needed to be smarter and to stop antagonising Renka because it would make things worst. Abigail called him a coward but he decided to let that go because she didn't know him. After telling her was a supporter of werewolf rights, he advised them to back off Renka and let her show her true colours on her own. Abigail agreed but told the student she needed to keep looking for her father. They suggested they find out who was really behind the break-ins to prove Renka wrong.[8]
After they both questioned residents in the village about the break-ins the night before, the student told Abigail that it really did look like werewolves were responsible. Abigail pointed out the break-ins didn't even happen during a full moon so it couldn't be werewolves. The student told her nothing was stolen other than potion ingredients. Abigail realised those ingredients were used in Wolfsbane Potions. She told the student that she needed to make a new batch for herself and that she knew a spot where they can pick up ingredients like aconite. She told them that even Professor Slughorn was struggling to find ingredients recently and that she had to pick wild herbs whenever she can.[8]
After finding the ingredients she needed, she took the student to her own secret potion-brewing kit in the Forbidden Forest. She helped the student brew the Wolfsbane Potion by telling them what to do. After they had made a batch, they saw a cloaked wizard picking ingredients nearby in the forest. He ran away and they chased him until he ran into centaurs. After he attacked them to escape, the centaurs turned on Abigail and the student. When they told them they were not with the wizard, they agreed to let them go. Abigail told the student the wizard was collecting aconite and wondered if he was also a werewolf.[8]
One day, the student saw Abigail in Hogsmeade and asked her if she was enjoying it. She responded that she was, but that she saw Renka earlier and they had given each other nasty looks. The student agreed Renka was rude but advised Abigail not to stoop to her level.[5]
Reuniting with her father[]
The next day, the student and Abigail visited the Hog's Head Inn. Aberforth asked why they were there and if they were up to trouble. The student responded that it depended on what he meant by trouble. Abigail admitted they were investigating the break-ins. After telling Aberforth the evidence looked like werewolves wrre responsible, Abigail pointed out that the break-ins happened when there wasn't a full moon. The student told Aberforth they thought someone was trying to frame werewolves before trying to suggest it could be Renka.[9]
Aberforth told them to be careful because if it was a witch or wizard, they were in constant danger compared to werewolves once a month. He told them to leave it to him. Abigail asked if he thought Renka could be responsible. He thought Renka was devious but warned them if they were going to accuse Renka, they needed proof because she can be very persuasive. He sent them away to get their shopping and to enjoy the snow. Before they left, the student informed him about previous night when they saw a cloaked wizard collecting aconite in the forest. He called it further proof they could run into danger.[9]
Even though they were told to stop investigating, the student and Abigail spent the afternoon asking Hogsmeade residents about the break-ins. While there were people who wanted to help, others didn't like students getting involved in their business with their investigation starting to draw suspicion. That evening, the student was talking to Abigail about sweets. Abigail thought Canary Creams were delicious and asked if they were their favourite. The student agreed but also loved the Elephant on a Bicycle which Abigail thought they were rather clever. It reminded the student of Luna Scamander who Abigail would love to meet. While they were talking, they were approached by a group of cloaked witches and wizards. They tried to escape but after their duel, they Apparated away with Abigail.[9]
The student tracked them down to the Hog's Head Inn where Abigail's father, Gerard, walked in and reunited with his daughter. After introducing her friend, he was curious about the person helping his daughter and asked the student what they thought of werewolves. He liked their answer that werewolves were just people and they didn't know why everyone was scared. He was glad his daughter had a friend who was so understanding. Gerard revealed they were in the basement of the Hog's Head where Aberforth been letting them hide after Renka started causing trouble. He thought they had made it worst but Abigail tried to say she was just defending them. Gerard told her she had fallen into Renka's trap and that she had to stop engaging with her for their safety.[9]
After realising the cloaked witches and wizards with him were also werewolves, Gerard revealed they were his new pack. Abigail knew it wasn't them but still felt that she had to ask if they were involved in the break-ins. Gerard told her they weren't and that it was Renka's doing. He also told them they had been having a hard time finding ingredients for the Wolfsbane Potion which meant Renka's claim werewolves were dangerous could be proven right during the next full moon.[9]
The student told Gerard they could help brew the potion. Abigail happily told her father that their friend proved that not everybody was bad and that she can help them to blend in because she had been doing it for years. Gerard didn't want them putting themselves in danger but also knew they were going to help whether they wanted them to or not, agreeing they could be involved. After trying to find ingredients, the student and Abigail headed to Madam Puddifoot's to talk with two members of Gerard's pack. The only thing that they had collected was aconite, with other ingredients proving hard to find.[9]
The two pack members wanted to leave because everyone kept looking at them. Abigail thought they should ignore the villagers for having nothing interesting going on in their own lives and fixtating on theirs. The student pointed out they weren't supposed to draw attention to themselves but Abigail thought it was fine. She drew their attention back to finding potion ingredients, but the two pack members had fared even worst at finding ingredients. Abigail thought it was odd how sparse it was and thought someone else was trying to buy the ingredients to make it difficult for werewolves.[9]
Renka then walked in and remarked that she thought their ilk would be in there. Renka told them only every "person" had the right to be there to which Abigail asked what she was implying. Renka shouted out that she thought Abigail was a werewolf too and took the pouch they had containing the aconite. The student demanded she give it back but Renka refused because she thought it would prove what beasts they truly were.[9]
Aberforth stepped in to tell her to stop. After telling her they shouldn't let fear cloud their greater natures, Renka started shouting that fear had nothing to do with these beasts being dangerous who destroy everything. Abigail told her if she was referring to the break-ins, it couldn't have been the werewolves because they didn't happen during a full moon. After accusing her of trying to frame werewolves, Renka was angered. She claimed she would never do that and that she knew Abigail was a werewolf who was trying to protect her "mangey" friends. Renka was shocked when Abigail told her the only mangey things were her house-elf figurines. Renka then ran off saying that they would be sorry.[9]
Aberforth apologised to the student and Abigail for having to witness that. Abigail told him it was okay because she was used to it but he thought it was wrong that her kind had to put up with this and that they shouldn't have to hide. After warning them not to do anything while the only thing Renka had were her words, he patted Abigail on the head and left.[9]
Abigail didn't care what he had to say and that she knew Renka was up to something. During the night of the full moon, the student and Abigail gave her father's pack a Wolfsbane Potion they had brewed. Gerard was grateful but told the student they better leave before they transformed. Abigail walked back with the student who hoped their potion would show everyone there was nothing to worry about after the full moon passed without incident.
They reminded Abigail to drink her potion but they were confused as to why her potion, which was part of a batch she had brewed on her own, was a different colour to the one they had brewed. Abigail then started worrying that the big batch they gave to her father's pack was brewed wrong, right before transforming into a werewolf. After verifying Abigail still had her own mind, the student realised Gerard and his pack had the faulty batch. Before they could get to safety, the pack surrounded Abigail and her friend, ready to attack.[9]
Her friend told Abigail to try to calm the pack down by communicating with them, she agreed and went in search of the werewolves that were running rampant around Hogsmeade. Meanwhile, the student and Aberforth dealt with another group of werewolves, but Renka intervened and the student followed her to confront her. When Abigail found them, she stopped Renka from casting a Memory Charm on her friend. Renka begged to Abigail not to hurt her, and she let her go. They returned to Hogsmeade and found the transformed Gerard, and Abigail tried to calm him down, but it didn't work, so together she and her friend managed to bind Gerard and take him to the Hog's Head Inn cellar.[10]
The next morning, Abigail and the other werewolves reunited outside of the Hog's Head Inn. Gerard was worried that they might have hurt someone, but the student assured him that everyone was safe and that Abigail had saved them many times. Moments later, Renka showed up and accused the pack of having injured innocent people, but Abigail and the student revealed that everyone was safe and that the break-ins and the sabotaged Wolfsbane Potion was Renka's doing. Renka also accused Abigail of nearly killing her, but she replied that she wouldn't pass her curse to anybody, even Renka.[10]
When the people from the town found the evidence of Renka's involvement, she was arrested and taken away. They also agreed that the pack was innocent, yet they were still afraid of the werewolves and the pack decided to leave. Abigail was surprised when Gerard announced that he was staying, and the student asked Abigail if she was also staying. Abigail answered that she would also be staying and that her Hogwarts journey wasn't over yet.[10]
Abigail later sent the Muggle-born student a letter thanking them for helping her to reunite with her father and to help clear the names of innocent werewolves. She admitted that she wasn't sure people in Hogsmeade would ever truly welcome werewolves, but she claimed that people like the student gave her hope for the future. She also let the student know that she and Gerard were catching up and that, while he hadn't quite forgiven himself yet and she doubted things could ever go back to how they were before, the student had given them both the chance to move forward.[11]
