- "Fred gave me one when I was seven, it burnt a hole right through my tongue."
- — Ron Weasley[src]
Acid Pops were one of the sweets sold by Honeydukes Sweetshop in Hogsmeade. They may have been similar to the Muggle lollipops, but like most Honeydukes' fare, they have an unconventional, magical twist wherein they were able to burn a hole in the tongue.[1]
History
"Acid Pops" was also a password used to gain entrance to Albus Dumbledore's office at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry while Harry was at school. Dumbledore informed Harry of this via a note which included the clue "P.S... I enjoy Acid Pops."[2]
Ron once mentioned that when he was seven, his brother, Fred Weasley, gave him one and it burned a hole straight through his tongue. His mother then spanked Fred with her broom.[1]
Behind the scenes
- Given that they can burn a hole through the tongue, Acid Pops would seem to be extremely dangerous and painful to eat, which begs the question why it is sold despite such a high risk of injury, although a possible explanation would be that the injuries caused by an Acid Pop are easily healed by magic means, since Ron's tongue damage was apparently healed without any complications or after-effects, making the consumption of Acid Pops a sort of a "magic extreme sport of the tongue".
- The concept of an acidic sweet is a reference to the fact that sourness is caused by low-strength acids. Thus, like "every flavour beans", they are a muggle sweet, in this case sour sweets, taken to a magical extreme. This also explains why the real-life acid pops are sour sweets.
- Hasbro used to sell Acid Pops as novelty sweets.[3][4]
