The All-Wizard Tournament was a competition held at Hogwarts School during the 1988–1989 school year. It was created by Silvanus Kettleburn and Rubeus Hagrid to simulate the challenges in the, then discontinued, Triwizard Tournament. This was intended to prepare selected students who showed the potential to become the Hogwarts school champion to compete in the tournament if it was reinstated.[1]

At the time, there were rumours about the British Ministry of Magic bringing back the tournament,[1] though these did not come to fruition and the next Triwizard Tournament was not held until the 1994–1995 school year.[2]

As stated by Penny Haywood, the tournament also helped distract students' minds from the then ongoing portrait curse crisis affecting the school.[3]

Rubeus Hagrid and Silvanus Kettleburn informed several fifth-year students about the upcoming Tournament on the Hogwarts grounds. Jacob's sibling, Tulip Karasu, Andre Egwu, Badeea Ali, Merula Snyde, Barnaby Lee, Nymphadora Tonks, Charlie Weasley, Liz Tuttle, Ismelda Murk and Jae Kim were the students ultimately chosen by Professor Dumbledore to compete. He believed that each of the students had the potential to represent Hogwarts as the school champion if the Triwizard tournament would be reinstated.[4] During Jacob's time at Hogwarts, he had also been considered a potential candidate.[1]

The First Task[]

The First Task being held in the History of Magic classroom

The First Task was held in the History of Magic Classroom, involving Nifflers finding shiny objects. The students competed with each other and the creatures to gain the most in an allotted time, made more difficult by the fact that the nifflers were as likely to steal from them as much as find objects from the room. It was worth 100 points.[3]

Jacob's sibling won this task.[3]

When the students complained about the relative ease of the task compared to the danger and difficulty that they were expecting after researching previous Triwizard tournaments, Hagrid confessed that he had greatly diminished the difficulty of the planned task after hearing about how worried they were about the dangers they found during their research. However, Professor Kettleburn assured the students that the next task, which he planned, would be harder.[3]

After the task, each of the students was given one of the pieces. With help from Jae Kim and Andre Egwu, Jacob's sibling ultimately realised that untransfiguring the object would provide them the clue to the next task. The object turned into a jar of Doxy eggs.[3]

The Second Task[]

The Second Task was held in the Training Grounds, involving successfully gaining control of a broomstick cursed with a Hurling Hex, then using it to catch a Doxy. It was worth 300 points.[4]

Andre Egwu, Merula Snyde, and Jacob's sibling were the only ones to successfully gain control of brooms. Andre ultimate caught the doxy and won the points.[4]

During the task, a cage of additional doxies was knocked over, resulting in the creatures escaping and swarming the training grounds. Several students, both spectators and contestants that hadn't gained control of their brooms, were bitten and had to be treated in the Hospital Wing. Though each would recover, Madam Pomfrey forbade them from competing in any more tasks.[4]

Around this time, the Ministry of Magic learned of the tournament and considered cancelling it due to the "unregulated dangers" that it presented. Professor Dumbledore called Hagrid and Kettleburn, as well as those students uninjured by the doxy swarm, to his office to discuss continuing the tournament.[4]

Of the students that had started at the beginning, those remaining were Jacob's sibling, Merula Snyde, Badeea Ali, Andre Egwu, Liz Tuttle and Jae Kim. After hearing each participant's personal reasons for continuing with the tournament, Dumbledore commended their competitive spirit and volunteered to arrange the final task himself. This was both to demonstrate the to the students the kind of tasks that would be in a genuine tournament, and to give it the kind of prestige that may make the Ministry reconsider cancelling it.[4]

In conclusion, said that the next clue would find them and warned the participants that the final task would not only be dangerous, it would be personal.[4]

The Final Task[]

The Third Task being held in the Forbidden Forest, involving a Manticore

That night, Badeea summoned the remaining participants to a meeting in the courtyard to discuss the potential implications of Dumbledore's warnings, partly due to the fact that she was unable to sleep due to worrying about them. Andre and Merula elected to spend the time practising against training dummies, but the others joined her discussion. The results were inconclusive but directly afterwards a niffler brought a golden object out and left it behind.[5]

Remembering the first task, Jacob's sibling untransfigured the object which turned into a Howler. The howler contained the voices of their friends (the remaining participants), yelling that they were being attacked by a Manticore in the Forbidden Forest. The group rush to the forest to the forest to discover that they were indeed cornered by the aggressive and carnivorous magical beast.[5]

Under the leadership of Jacob's sibling, the participants attacked the creature but were unsuccessful as Manticore's hide was able to repel all known magical spells. The attacks did gain its attention, however, and Jacob's sibling had to tackle Merula out of the way to prevent her from being killed by the creature's deadly tail.[5]

Using the statements from each of their friends as inspiration, Jacob's sibling came up with the idea of attacking it indirectly and the group instead fired spells at a large tree branch above the Manticore's head. The branch came down hard and incapacitated the creature. At that moment, Professor Dumbledore, Professor Kettleburn, and Hagrid emerged from the trees, revealing that the encounter was the final task of the tournament. When Charlie pointed out that none of them were able to defeat the manticore on their own, possibly making the task invalid, Dumbledore instead invited them to reconvene in the Great Hall.[5]

The final meeting[]

The entire school was at the meeting in the Great Hall. When Professor Dumbledore stepped forward to make his announcements, he revealed that the final task was worth 500 points and, despite Charlie Weasley's misgivings, there was indeed a winner.[5]

The Final Task had been deliberately designed to be impossible to achieve by one individual. As it took courage and intelligence to realise this, to set aside their immediate goal (the cup) and to lead others by encouraging unity in the face of otherwise overwhelming dangers. Therefore, Jacob's sibling was declared the winner of the task, and of the tournament.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The points attributed to the tasks were designed very poorly, as whoever won the Final Task was guaranteed to win the Tournament, regardless of the winners of the first two tasks. During the whole Tournament, no one seems to have picked this up or questioned its validity. Speaking from an in-universe point of view, this could perhaps show the generally inferior mathematical skills among wizardkind.
  • Though the creatures in the second task are described as Doxies and are said to have venomous bites, the in-game model used is that of a pixie, possibly to avoid having to create a new model for the scenes involving the creatures.
  • It's currently unknown if the All-Wizard Tournament was held after that school year, therefore Jacob's sibling remains the only known winner and possessor of the All-Wizard Cup.
