"— the Ministry of Magic keeps tabs on witches and wizards who can become animals; there's a register showing what animal they become, and their markings and things... and I went and looked Professor McGonagall up on the register, and there have been only seven Animagi this century, and Pettigrew's name wasn't on the list."
— Description of the registry[src]

The Animagus Registry[1] was a British Ministry of Magic registry service, under the Improper Use of Magic Office[2] within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Animagi were required to submit themselves once they acquired the ability to turn into an animal,[3] and failure to do so would result in imprisonment in Azkaban.[4] The registry was in place by at least the 1890–1891 school year, as that year Patricia McManners was arrested for being an unregistered Animagus and sent to Azkaban.[5]

The registry was available to public view, so as to ensure the registered individuals did not abuse their abilities, however this could sometimes be a detriment; Talbott Winger's mother (a registered Animagus whose Animagus form was a swan) was attacked by Death Eaters who managed to kill her due to their knowledge of her Animagus form. Talbott Winger, who was unregistered at the time, only survived the attack because the Death Eaters didn't know about his Animagus form.[6] Only seven Animagi were registered during the 20th century.[3]
