Apollonia Black was a witch and a member of the noble House of Black. She was a contemporary of her relative Phineas Nigellus Black.[2]

Biography[]

She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at an unknown time in the 1790s and eventually came to possess the house-elf Scrope.[2]

In life, Richard Jackdaw attempted to woo her by showing her the ripped pages of a book stolen from Peeves, but his love was unrequited, as Apollonia did not consider the gift to be valuable enough.[2]

When Jackdaw was decapitated, Apollonia gave a false testimony to convict Anne Thisbe, Jackdaw's lover, supposedly out of jealousy or prejudice. The House of Black's power over the British Ministry of Magic, as well as the fact that Anne was Muggle-born, sealed her fate. Anne was wrongfully sent to Azkaban and remained there well into the 1890s.[5]

Before she died, she spoke passionately about the pages ripped from Peeves' book, which she took to her private grotto. She also forbade Scrope from entering this grotto, and was on one occasion frustrated with Scrope and damaged his ear with a cleaver. Apollonia possessed a family ring which she kept in this grotto, though it was posthumously sold by Richard Jackdaw.[2]

By the time of her death, she was delirious, eventually mistaking belladonna for elderberries and accidentally consuming the fatal poison, although Scrope had attempted to warn her otherwise.[2]

Personality and traits[]

She was regarded by Helen Thistlewood to be a "wretched, vindictive girl".[5] Despite the fact that she showed no interest in Richard Jackdaw, she couldn't stand that he was giving his attention to another girl, Anne Thisbe, a Muggle-born. After Jackdaw's death, she actually gave false testimony to send Anne to Azkaban for murder.

Etymology[]

"Apollonia" is derived from the Greek god Apollo, the god of oracles, healing, archery, music and arts, sunlight, knowledge, herds and flocks, and protection of the young.[6] It was also the name of an Ancient Greek colony based in Albania.[7]

"Black" refers to the darkest colour, which is the result of the absence of light.
