This grotto was a location near the Great Lake in Scotland. It belonged to Apollonia Black.[1]

Description[]

The grotto was in a cave on the edge of the Great Lake in Scotland. It was accessed by entering the cave, then swimming through the water to a wall with a fountain in front of it. The wall had a painting of the Giant Squid on it. By putting a piece of toast on the fountain, it would levitate toward the wall where it was received by one of the Giant Squid's tentacles. When it ate the toast, the wall would open up to the grotto.[1]

The grotto was small. There was a desk with Apollonia's journal on it. It was her idea to have the wall open by giving the Giant Squid a piece of toast because she knew some of them loved eating it.[1]

History[]

At some point before the 1890s, Apollonia Black had a private grotto near the edge of the Great Lake. She forbade her house-elf, Scrope from entering it.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The grotto only opens in Hogwarts Legacy if the player chooses Slytherin house. It is part of a house-specific quest called Scrope's Last Hope where the player will meet Richard Jackdaw. If the player chooses a different house, they are introduced to Richard in a different way so it is contradicted in-universe.
    • In the Slytherin quest, Scrope leads the player to the edge of the Great Lake by leaving notes. He needs the player to help search the grotto to find the Black family ring. He also thought the missing pages of a book the player is searching for could be in there. He gives them a piece of toast. The player will travel to the grotto, then upon entering it, find Richard Jackdaw inside it.
