"Welcome class! I am Professor Arif Sikander. It is my pleasure to take over Muggle Studies while Professor Quirrell enjoys his European tour."
— Professor Sikander introducing himself to seventh-year students in 1990[src]

Professor Arif Sikander was a wizard who acted as the replacement Muggle Studies professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1990–1991 school year, whilst the former teacher Quirinus Quirrell was away on a sabbatical trip in Europe.[2][3]

Biography[]

1990–1991 school year[]

Sikander was introduced as Professor Quirrell's replacement as the Muggle Studies Professor at the 1990 Start-of-Term Feast.[2] He introuced himself later to seventh-year students in his first lesson with them in the Muggle Studies Classroom.[3] He taught his seventh-year students about many fascinating Muggle inventions.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] He also kept a pinball machine for recreation, along with model cars.[14]

During the school year, he had a conversation with Severus Snape about Muggle chemistry in the Potions Classroom, before they were interrupted by Jacob's sibling and Nymphadora Tonks. Snape, however did not want to speak to him and rudely rejected his attempts at friendliness, although Sikander was cordial in response.[15]

Later on, Jacob's sibling and Corey Hayden approached Sikander in the Muggle Studies Classroom with a cursed CD case they needed destroying with Muggle means to free several people (including Professor Flitwick) of a laughing curse attached to it. He first suggested destroying it by scratching it with their nails like what Muggles would often do, but this was not an option as the CD case spread the curse by touch. He and the students then decided to use a magically-powered microwave in the classroom to destroy it, which worked. He thanked the students for requesting his help and told them to come to him again about any similar issues.[5]

Later during the year, Jacob's sibling decided to inquire Sikander about what he knew about Olivia Green, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher whom they were suspicious of.[16] He told them in his classroom that Green often could be found writing in her journal in the Clocktower Courtyard during her free time, and that observation was key to learning information about people. He also told them that he owned a pinball machine which he kept in his private quarters.[14]

Professor Sikander later met with Jacob's sibling in the Clock Tower Courtyard, where he asked them to help him prepare several Muggle artefacts for upcoming lessons.[17] Later Sikander also evaluated formerly cursed Muggle items with Jacob's sibling and other students in the Muggle Studies Classroom for preparation.[18]

Physical description[]

Sikander was a wizard who wore a green blazer over a brightly-coloured jumper with a pocket watch and blue shirt, with brown trousers. He had pale skin, brown eyes and short brown hair with a beard and moustache.[3]

Personality and traits[]

Sikander was a friendly wizard who was enthusiastic about Muggle Studies, particularly Muggle items.[3][14] He was willing to assist students with extracurricular problems and inquiries of need to them, such as demonstrated with Jacob's sibling on certain occassions.[5][14][18] He was also cordial and professional with his colleagues, even when Severus Snape was rather rude to him.[15]

Magical abilities and skills[]

Etymology[]

Arif is a male Arabic name meaning "knowledgeable" or "wise". Sikandar is the Persian version of the name Alexander, meaning "to defend man".
