The Thunderbird was endemic to the arid desert regions of Arizona. In 1926, British magizoologist Newt Scamander took Frank, a Thunderbird he rescued from poachers in Egypt, with him on his trip to the United States, promising to return the creature to his native habitat. However, due to events in New York City, where Scamander arrived, Newt released Frank over the city. He did this to take advantage of the Thunderbird's weather related powers to create a rainstorm laced with Swooping Evil venom to erase the memories of the city's No-Maj population of the events.
Frank eventually managed to return to Arizona after being released.
