An astrolabe is an ancient navigation tool that was essentially a handheld version of the universe and mainly used for studying the stars, but also had, according to Grace Pinch-Smedley, "a thousand" other uses.[1]

History[]

The Pinch-Smedley family had an astrolabe. Grace Pinch-Smedley's grandfather and grandmother sailed into the Great Lake with the astrolabe to stargaze but never returned. Her father was so distraught that he forbade the family from entering the lake, and so when Grace wanted to retrieve the astrolabe from the lake to bring her father some peace, she asked the new fifth-year student during the 1890–1891 school year to do it for her.[1]

A portrait hung in the Headmaster's office depicted a Headmaster with an astrolabe.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In Hogwarts Legacy, after the player retrieves the Pinch-Smedleys' astrolabe from the Great Lake, they can choose to give it back for free, or for a reward, or keep it for themself, in which case it can then be put in the Room of Requirement.
