- "Now, I must warn you that the most stringent anti-cheating charms have been applied to your examination papers. Auto-Answer Quills are banned from the examination hall, as are Remembralls, Detachable Cribbing Cuffs and Self-Correcting Ink."
- — Professor McGonagall talking to fifth-years about the upcoming O.W.L. exams[src]
Auto-Answer Quills were magical quills that most likely wrote out the answer to questions automatically.[2][3]
History[]
During the 1988–1989 school year, Jae Kim smuggled a box of Auto-Answer Quills into Hogwarts Castle to sell to students who wanted to cheat on their exams. When Jacob's sibling came to him asking which career he thought would be best for them, Jae had them organise their stock whilst he talked to Penny Haywood, who was thinking of buying one. Jacob's sibling convinced her that she didn't need one, however.[1]
In 1996, they were banned during Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[2]
During the 2009–2010 school year, Robyn Thistlethwaite nicked an Auto-Answer Quill from the Frey brothers and used it to demonstrate her "memory" about the Forgetfulness Potion to Ivy Warrington, Daniel Page and another student. When the latter used the Summoning Charm to summon the quill, thus finding out the truth, Robyn said this was to teach the Frey brothers a lesson by having them find out their quill was missing before an examination.[4]
