This Chinese Fireball was cared for by an unidentified student, Colby Frey and Long Shouren in the early 2010s. She lived in the Room of Requirement after she hatched.[1]

Biography[]

Before she hatched, she and two other dragon eggs were going to be traded legally when it was sanctioned by the British Ministry of Magic. Long Shouren disagreed with even legal trade of eggs and persuaded a student of Hogwarts to help steal them. After they Apparated to Diagon Alley, they stole the eggs and took them back to Hogwarts Castle.[2]

The student suggested hiding the eggs in the Room of Requirement, where they were heard by Colby Frey. Together, they cared for the eggs.[2] Shouren managed to secure homes for the other two eggs, but the Chinese Fireball hatched before he could get her to one. The student was there when she hatched and told Colby. While they discussed what to do with her, Shouren arrived. He told them the hatchling was female and that baby dragons could be a handful. He was going to try and find her a home, but it would be harder now that she had hatched. They continued to care for her and Colby grew attached. He tried to argue with Shouren that she would be safer at Hogwarts, but he pointed out she would grow and it would be very dangerous.[1]

The hatchling often set things on fire when she burped sparks in her room, which they had to keep extinguishing. The Room of Requirement also provided her a toy dragon which she liked gnawing on.[1]

When Shouren found a new home for her, he asked the student to bring her to the Forbidden Forest at midnight. They thought they had taken her there unnoticed, but Colby had followed them so he could say goodbye to her. While they were talking, the dragon flew off to Rubeus Hagrid's Hut. Hagrid caught her standing outside, and, when he started asking questions, the student and Colby told Hagrid what they had been up to. He decided to keep their secret when he heard they were helping Shouren get her away that night because she reminded him of the baby dragon, Norberta, that he once had.[3]

However the Chinese Fireball spooked another dragon, an Antipodean Opaleye, that Hagrid was caring for. When that dragon flew off, Hagrid and Colby chased her. In their absence, a poacher, Kellen Carrion confronted the student and demanded they hand over the Chinese Fireball. The student refused and pointed out the baby dragon, who was upset, didn't like him. He responded that the feeling was mutual. Fortunately, Hagrid returned to intervene. They successfully defeated Kellen in a duel but the baby dragon flew off during the fight.[3]

Hagrid stayed to fight off Kellen's poacher group to give the student time to catch the dragon and get her back to the castle. They managed to get her but Kellen had also caught up with them. They used the Stunning Spell on him which temporarily knocked him out but he didn't stayed down long enough. The student ran with the dragon to Shouren who started duelling Kellen. Qui LeBlanc, a member of Kellen's group, took the dragon during the fight. The student chased them but Qui kept the dragon until she bit Qui, who called her a "nasty beast".[3]

Qui trapped the student and the dragon in a wall of fire. The student bested her in a duel and while trying to get out of the fire with the dragon, Shouren arrived and saved them. Kellen was in pursuit but the baby dragon attacked him. Shouren intervened and saved Kellen's life. With the poachers gone, Shouren fled to avoid arrest for stealing her when she was an egg. The student continued to care for her until Shouren sent for her. He then took her to her new home.[3]

Shouren later sent a letter to the Muggle-born student informing them of the status of the baby dragon. He stated that the baby was growing well and that she had recently blown her first real fire breath. Shouren expressed his wish that the student could see the dragon, but asserted that it was still too dangerous for all involved for him to share his and the dragon's location. He stated that the baby dragon missed the student and that the both of them looked forward to the day they could be free to reunite with the student.[4]

By September 2011, a letter from Shouren let the student know that the dragon was "not so little anymore".[5]

Personality and traits[]

Shouren described her as "feisty".[1]
