- "Welcome everyone. I see you've already met some of the many beasts we study in this class. Though, be advised, none of these creatures should be taken lightly. They are all, in their own way, dangerous — especially if one does not know how to handle them properly."
- — Professor Howin[src]
Professor Bai Howin (fl. 1890) was a witch who taught Beasts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the late 19th century.[3]
Biography[]
During her youth, Howin attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was Sorted into Hufflepuff house. An encounter with an Occamy left her in awe of beasts, making her loathe poachers for use of Galleons.[4]
After she became the Beasts professor at Hogwarts, in 1890, Howin introduced a new student to their first ever Beasts class. At the start of the lesson, she warned her students of the dangers a creature could pose if they did not take proper care of it. Her lesson was a review in the basics of how to care for a beast with each student getting a Puffskein. When one named Gerald put its long tongue in Poppy Sweeting's face, she told her to pay attention for "the tongue of a Puffskein can be a slippery devil". Toward the end of the lesson, she asked Poppy to take the new student to the Kneazle pen.[3]
When the lesson was over, she spoke to her new student and asked if they enjoyed the lesson. She had seen the student with Poppy protecting a Kneazle when two students tried to rip her whiskers off, and was grateful but asked that they leave it to her in the future. She thought the students were nearly as bad as Victor Rookwood's Poacher Pack. She considered the deaths of creatures to be a waste of resources.[3]
Outside of lessons, she also encouraged the student to study beasts. As the Deputy Headmistress Matilda Weasley asked her to give the student a few assignments so they could catch up with their year group,[3] Professor Howin asked them to acquire a Diricawl as well as a Giant Purple Toad with their nab-sack, and taught them the Bombardment Spell after they completed the tasks.[5]
She once asked the class if they encountered a dangerous beast. A student answered "canary", an answer that prompted her to almost kick the student out of class.[6]
Personality and traits[]
While Howin was known to have respect for beasts, she believed they were ultimately useful for protective clothing, potion ingredients, and even wand cores, and wanted future generations to believe this fact.[4] While the beasts at Hogwarts were safe for students to be around, she was known to over-exaggerate the dangers at the start of her lessons.[3]
Magical abilities and skills[]
- Magizoology: Professor Howin taught the subject of Beasts at Hogwarts, showing she was an experienced Magizoologist with a thorough understanding of magical beasts and how to handle them.[3]
- Charms: Professor Howin was able to cast the Bombardment Spell and teach it to the new fifth-year student.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- Professor Howin is voiced by Jeannie Bolét in Hogwarts Legacy.[7]
- Her name and appearance suggest she may be of Chinese heritage. The Chinese version translates Howin to 皓莺, so her full name may be 白皓莺 or 柏皓莺 depending on the character of Bai. Though in this case, her surname should actually be Bai due to Chinese naming conventions.
