The grandmother of Barnaby Lee (whom he called his "grandmum") was a British Dark witch living in London.[2]

Biography[]

Barnaby's grandmother owned a collection of dark artefacts. Since she never bought him toys as a child, Barnaby used to play with her artefacts when he visited her house instead, although his grandmother didn't want him to touch them.[3][2]

Barnaby's grandmother owned a Crup, although her grandson suspected she only did to scare Muggles.[4][citation needed] She also owned an Occamy eggshell, which she forbade Barnaby from holding.[5] She also regularly told her grandson not to step in mysterious messes, particularly puddles,[1] and never let her grandson learn much about Muggles.[6]

Barnaby's grandmother also had her grandson catch Bundimuns in the shed of her house and taught him how to safely extract Bundimun Secretion to use in Doxycide.[7]

On one night before Barnaby started attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Cecil Lee took Barnaby, his parents, and his grandmother on a camping trip where he made a roaring campfire and served them some of his famous cocoa, complete with his pet Fire Dwelling Salamander Vulcan performing a cocoa-warming trick. Barnaby later recalled that everyone loved seeing the trick, even his parents, claiming that the moment was one of the only happy memories he had of them.[8]

Barnaby's grandmother later took Barnaby in following his parents' arrest and Azkaban sentencing in the aftermath of Voldemort's demise on 31 October 1981.[9][10] While she remained as cold to him as she had been previously, she still ensured that he always had food and a place to call home.[10]

After Barnaby graduated from Hogwarts, he and his pet Knarl, Knarl, continued living in his grandmother's house in London, as he was unable to afford his own flat due to not yet having started his new job as a Houndmaster for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. However, Barnaby was displeased to be living with his grandmother, being unnerved by her propensity to lurk in dark corners and displeased by her tendency to negatively comment on his life choices.[11][10] He also frequently became lost while trying to find one of the ten bathrooms in her massive house and his grandmother forbade him from displaying his statue of a Mooncalf in her living room.[12][2] While explaining this situation to Jacob's sibling at the Three Broomsticks, Jacob's sibling reassured Barnaby that his work would enable him to have to spend less time at his grandmother's house before he and Knarl could finally move out.[11]

Barnaby's grandmother claimed that Barnaby would never acquire his Apparition licence, believing that he wasn't serious enough to obtain one. When Barnaby was preparing for the Apparition exam after taking a twelve-week remedial course with Jacob's sibling and Nymphadora Tonks under the instruction of Wilkie Twycross, he expressed a fear that he would prove his grandmother right by failing the exam. However, after being reassured by Jacob's sibling and Tonks, Barnaby was successfully able to pass the exam and acquire his licence, defying his grandmother's prediction.[13]

Barnaby's grandmother later became sick with a cold, leading to her becoming even more grumpy than usual according to Barnaby, who was forced to clean her giant house all by himself.[14][15] Barnaby also later brought one of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures's albino bloodhounds to his grandmother's house, with the dog ruining her carpet.[1]

Despite Barnaby claiming that his grandmother seemed to be getting over her cold, she eventually died in 1992. Cecil Lee informed Barnaby of her death while he was talking with Jacob's sibling in the Ministry All-Purpose Room, deeply saddening him. Jacob's sibling organised a get-together of their friends in the Hog's Head Inn to help comfort Barnaby regarding his feelings of loss at her death, with the group consoling him until Barnaby had to leave to help Cecil at his grandmother's house. The suddenness of her death also inspired Jacob's sibling to tell Jacob to come clean regarding his feelings for Olivia Green, as they now realised there was always a possibility he might not get the chance to do so.[1]

Following her death, a portrait of Barnaby's grandmother was hung in the living room of her house, with the portrait continuing to complain about the changes being made to her house as a result of Penny Haywood, Liz Tuttle, Alanza Alves, Andre Egwu, and Tulip Karasu moving in.[2][16]
