The Basic Cast (incantation unknown) was a spell that shot red sparks out of the caster's wand and caused damage or harm to targets. The spell was prominently used in duelling and warding off attacking creatures.[1]
History[]
The spell was taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the 19th century. During the summer prior to the 1890–1891 school year, Professor Eleazar Fig taught the spell to an unidentified student before they began their fifth year. On 1 September, the student used it to break a wall of ice protecting the path to some ancient ruins.[1]
The next day in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Professor Dinah Hecat let the new fifth-year student try out the Basic Cast on a training dummy protected by a magical shield, which deflected the cast. She instructed them to use Levioso to break the shield before using the Basic Cast again, which then hit the dummy successfully. She then arranged for the student to duel with Sebastian Sallow, and reminded them that only Levioso, Protego and the Basic Cast were allowed to constitute a fair duel.[2]
