- "Alert! Death Eaters have attacked the Ministry. Dolores Umbridge has escaped!"
- — Description[src]
The Battle at the Ministry was the final conflict of the Second Wizarding War, during the tenure of new Minister for Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt. It happened in late 1998, on the day of the trial of Dolores Umbridge.[1]
History[]
Background[]
Dolores Umbridge, along with other Ministry personnel, after the fall of the British Ministry of Magic
After Lord Voldemort seized control of the British Ministry of Magic in 1997, Dolores Umbridge, the Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic led the effort to register and persecute Muggle-borns through the Muggle-Born Registration Commission. Innocent Muggle-borns were put on trial, forced to face Dementors, and imprisoned in Azkaban on false accusations of stealing magic from pure-bloods.[2]
Following Voldemort's defeat by Harry Potter and Kingsley Shacklebolt's reformation of the Ministry, Umbridge was arrested to be brought before a restructured Wizengamot.[1]
The battle[]
In late 1998, on the day of Dolores Umbridge's trial, she escaped from custody with the help of several Death Eaters — Corban Yaxley, Walden Macnair, and the Carrows. After retrieving her wand, Umbridge entered a Ministry lift and launched an attack on other people, targeting the crowds of witches and wizards who had gathered to witness her trial.[1]

Their breakout triggered a violent and chaotic battle within the Ministry of Magic. The group rampaged through several departments, causing destruction as they made their way toward the Department of Mysteries. When the skirmish reached the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, mayhem was unleashed when a fierce duel caused the beast containment to break, and dozens of magical creatures escaped into the Ministry halls — Occamies, Augureys, a young Runespoor, a Leucrotta, and even a rampaging Erumpent.[1]
Umbridge captures Higgledy, the house-elf who had once served her but had since turned against her, and she was bounded with the Incarcerous Spell. Amidst the chaos, the Erumpent attacked one of the lifts full of people, sending it flying into the air.[1]
The Time Room falling apart.
Umbridge dragged Higgledy into the Time Room in the Department of Mysteries while Ministry officials, along with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley — present to witness the trial — pursued them. Umbridge planned to use a Time-Turner to return to the past and restore Voldemort's regime. However, she made the Time Room erupt in a massive explosion when she inadvertently destroyed all the time-turners, shattering her plans.[1]
In the confusion, as the Time Room was destroyed, Higgledy escaped and seized back Umbridge's wand, leaving her defenceless. Harry and Ron seized the opportunity, capturing the disarmed Dolores Umbridge and Apparating her directly into Courtroom Ten, where she was finally subdued.[1]
Umbridge was taken back into custody and later sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban for her crimes.[1][3]
