This battle occurred in the Keepers' Caverns beneath Hogwarts Castle in an area that was not protected by Hogwarts's defensive charms. It marked the conclusion of Ranrok's goblin rebellion and his attempt to elevate goblins above wizardkind, whom he intended to wipe out.[1]

Background[]

In the 15th16th century, Isidora Morganach extracted emotions from students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and contained them in the final repository, a goblin silver storage unit in the Keepers' Caverns built by Bragbor.[2][3] Ranrok discovered the repository's existence by hunting down various sites that Isidora had used within her lifetime and constructed massive drills to pierce the mountains of Hogwarts.[3][4]

Meanwhile, an unidentified Hogwarts student with the ability to use and perceive ancient magic had started Hogwarts in their fifth year. Throughout the year, they had been tutored by Eleazar Fig and the portraits of the Keepers with the hope of continuing to safeguard ancient magic against abuse from outsiders, but also to use their powers to protect the wizarding world from Ranrok's incursions. In the end, this battle was the final opportunity to end Ranrok once and for all.[1]

Events[]

Ranrok began his invasion by drilling through the mountain on which Hogwarts Castle was built, which were not defended by the same defensive charms that guarded the castle itself, bringing his Loyalists and various trolls with him.[1]

The Final Repository - Professors arrival HL

The arrival of the professors

Eleazar Fig had informed his colleagues, the professors of Hogwarts, about the attack. Professors Matilda Weasley, Mudiwa Onai, Aesop Sharp, Abraham Ronen, and Dinah Hecat promptly arrived to help Fig and his student, who had the ability to use and perceive ancient magic, to defend the cavern.[1] This student was also in possession of the Keepers' wand, a device necessary to open the door to the final repository, which Victor Rookwood had earlier unsuccessfully attempted to steal.[1][5]

After this student and Fig entered the repository chamber, Ranrok appeared and, using Miriam Fig's wand, broke open the final repository and inhaled its emotions, acquiring unrivalled power. He transformed into an invincible dragon-like creature and started a final duel with the student, crushing Eleazar Fig with debris.[1]

The student painstakingly defeated Ranrok and possibly used the Keepers' wand to create a new cage in which to trap the excess emotion. The student also possibly consumed and wielded the emotional magic themselves by opening the repository. Professor Fig afterwards died and was laid to rest. A memorial ceremony was held for him in the Great Hall following the battle.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The battle for the final repository is the fortieth and final mission of Hogwarts Legacy.

Possible conclusions[]

  • The battle has two possible endings, a good ending and evil ending. The fight with Ranrok itself is the same in both endings. The difference occurs after that when the player deals with the ancient magic unleashed in the room. The player will choose their ending before they leave for the repository. Eleazar Fig will tell the player that because of their power, they're going to have to take the role of Keeper over the reservoir. He asks what they are going to do with the magic it holds.
    • For the good ending, the player should respond with "I intend to keep it contained here". Fig will respond positively. He will also ask the player how long they intend to keep the ancient magic a secret, and the player can choose to keep the secret forever or tell those they trust when the time is right. When they've defeated Ranrok, the player will fight alongside Fig to contain the ancient magic while the room is crumbling. The fight will drain Fig and he will peacefully pass away once they are successful.
    • For the evil ending, the player should say "I intend to open it". Fig will react with concern and warn the player against it. The player will insist that they can wield it for good. At this point, the player has the option of changing their mind if they choose to tell Fig "you're right". However, if they still wish to pursue the evil ending, they can instead tell Fig that "this power should not be kept from the world". Instead of containing the ancient magic when Ranrok is defeated, the player will absorb it which causes their eyes to glow red. Fig doesn't appear again in the evil ending.
  • After the battle for the final repository, the final scenes of the game including Fig's memorial are the same for every player regardless of their choices.
