The Bean Challenge rooms (referred to individually as Bean Challenge 1, Bean Challenge 2, Bean Challenge 3, and Bean Challenge 4) were a set of four rooms on the seventh floor of Hogwarts Castle, located along a hall near the disused seventh floor bathroom that Fred and George Weasley used as a shop. They were so named because each room was an obstacle course containing a number of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans of a certain colour.[1]
History[]
Fred and George ran a challenge during the 1992–1993 school year, offering passwords to portraits in the Portrait Room and Chocolate Frog Cards of the founders of Hogwarts to those who could successfully complete each obstacle course by collecting every bean within. Harry Potter successfully completed these tasks at some point during the year.[1]
Bean Challenge 1[]
Bean Challenge 1
This challenge contained ten blueberry-flavoured beans. The course contained a maze of winding stairwells, trapped with jets of fire streaming from the walls and floors and endless supplies of large barrels rolling dangerously down three sets of stairs. For completing the course, Harry received Helga Hufflepuff's Chocolate Frog Card and the password for a portrait concealing a shortcut between the Portrait Room and the second floor (Scuttlegrip).[1]
Bean Challenge 2[]

This challenge contained fifteen cabbage-flavoured beans. The course consisted of a set of unstable platforms floating over a pit. These platforms could not support the weight of a human for longer than a few seconds, making navigating them dangerous. The beans were carried by an owl, which dropped them in an set fashion onto each platform. For completing the course, Harry received Salazar Slytherin's Chocolate Frog Card and the password for a portrait concealing a shortcut between the Portrait Room and the fourth floor (Jellyreed).[1]
Bean Challenge 3[]
This challenge contained twenty banana-flavoured beans. The course consisted of a maze of narrow passageways. Along some of them, hostile ghosts wandered along a set path, harming anyone who walked by. Other obstacles in the course included spiked floors and jets of fire. For completing the course, Harry received Rowena Ravenclaw's Chocolate Frog Card and the password for a portrait concealing a shortcut between the Portrait Room and a hidden room in Hogwarts Castle otherwise inaccessible. Bean Challenge 4[]
This challenge contained twenty-five chocolate-flavoured beans. By far the largest, the course was set out over a large number of platforms suspended over a large pit, many of which had to be set into motion by pulling levers located around the course. For completing the course, Harry received Godric Gryffindor's Chocolate Frog Card and the password for a portrait concealing a shortcut between the Portrait Room and another hidden room (Glovejuggler).[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The Bean Challenge rooms only appear in the GBA version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. As such, it is extremely unlikely they exist in canon, given the illogical nature surrounding them.
- The Bean Challenge rooms are analogous to the Bean Bonus Room in the PC version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where the goal is to collect as many beans as possible under a time limit.
